sucking on fingers
DS has been sucking on his index and middle fingers and I can't get him to stop, and I don't even know why I want him to!
I think it's because my 2 "cousins" did the same thing and have delayed speech and others things that I make the correlation....
Would you rather the fingers or the bink? At least you can take away the bink.....

You probably know my answer already, but I would DEF prefer the bink. Do doubt about it.

Re: sucking on fingers
Can you put something on his hands so he doesn't suck them? Give him a sucking toy or binky perhaps instead? When is he sucking on them?

Re: sucking on fingers
I think at this age it probably because DS is teething so it really doesn't bother me. DS tries to stick his whole fist in his mouth.

He started with the whole fist and has found it more convenient to use the 2 fingers. He does it ALL DAY....
And I have limited him to the bink mostly at night only.....so if I gave it to him while his fingers are in his mouth, it would be there all day!
He thinks it's funny.......laughs when I take them out of his mouth.....

Re: sucking on fingers
DD does this too and she is teething. Now i'm worried, i didn't know there was a correlation to speech delay. we have ped visit on Monday so i will ask.
she doesn't do it all day, sometimes more often than others. when i see her do it more often, i give her a couple of the Hylands tablets and they seem to help

Re: sucking on fingers
He sounds like he's teething. My kids started teething when they were only a few months old. although the didn't cut a tooth until their 5th and 6th month.

NOOOOOOO MARGARET!!!!!!!! It's not because they were sucking that they had speech delay, it's just something I put in my head....
I'm so sorry to make you nervous like that.....

Re: sucking on fingers
my Ds is three months and sucks on entire fist and fingers as well and he's not teething....now I'm wondering if I should be worried as there doesn't seem to be a real reason for him doing it, from what I read it seemed liked a soothing thing to me so I figured it was ok, he doesn't like a binky at all....

Re: sucking on fingers
Sucking thumbs/fingers doesn't cause speech delays- BUT long term sucking (think 4-5 years olds) will cause the teeth to shift, which can result in $$$$ orthodonture as well as difficulty with some speech sounds (s, sh).
I have a few "s"s on my caseload who were/are obvious thumbsuckers.
I prefer the bink HANDS DOWN- you can take the bink away eventually. Sadly, DD never wanted a bink (no matter how much I tried to force it on her).
At 5 months, I'd still let DC have the bink if it will keep from sucking fingers.

Re: sucking on fingers
I sucked my thumb alot longer than I would EVER admit on here and I had no issues. I did have braces but sooo many people do. DS is sucking his thumb and has always rejected the paci so not much I can do.

Re: sucking on fingers
We seem to be going through the same things at the same time
DS started sucking on his fingers as well, only if I give him the binkie, he either spits it out or pulls it out with his fingers and still sucks his fingers. I think my DS is teething, though, because I just started feeling the 2 bottom teeth under his gum when he started sucking MY finger.
BTW - we are swaddle free again 1 day with for naps and at night, 1 more night with it, and then I was able to take it away again.

Re: sucking on fingers
Nope, from what I've read sucking on thumbs of fingers does not cause speech delays or dental problems. So it's fine for babies to do it--a little unhygenic, but fine.
DS loves to suck his fingers, and started focussing on his thumb this weekend. I don't mind him doing it, it soothes him, and if he's happy, I'm happy. He's never been big on pacifiers, I've tried giving him one, but he usually spits it out.

Re: sucking on fingers
Matthew has been doing this for the past few days, except he has his whole hand (all his finger) in his mouth......All his teeth are in except his 2 year molars, so I have no clue what that is.....
