Suffolk County Community college?
I'm curious what this school is like. I've never been there and don't really know anything about it. Is it any good? I got a booklet in the mail and was looking at some course--not credit courses, just one time for personal interest. Like the photography, writing, cooking type classes. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

It is good. The professors there often teach at other colleges at well, and most of the classes I took there, my professors also taught at Hofstra, Stonybrook, etc. The campus is nice enough and it is convenient and always has parking, and there is a daycare, but I can't speak for that.
ETA - I am speaking about the brentwood campus

Re: Suffolk County Community college?
There are 3 campus.. Brentwood, Ammerman (selden) and Riverhead.
A lot of times the phamplets use pics from all 3 in one.. so you think everything is at one place!

Some classes are also held in Sayville.
I went to Brentwood and loved it. If I could have stayed there I would have.

I agree! I found that the quality of education I received at Suffolk far surpassed my subsequent schooling.

ETA - I am speaking about the brentwood campus ITA. They have a nice facility and the teachers are very current in their respective fields. I recommend both SCCC & NCC for continuing ed (or any ed for that matter!)

Re: Suffolk County Community college?
the teachers are fantastic and i had a great experience, learning-wise, attending there. the only problem was that my head just wasn't in it at the time. i took time off and decided that the suffolk route wasn't for me -- so i went to empire instead which is a MUCH better fit for my life. however, i'm going for my degree - not the kind of classes you are going for. if you are interested in those kinds of classes definitely check suffolk out - i preferred the brentwood campus.
my sister and brother also attended there - they said the same thing about the teachers and classes there vs. other places - how suffolk was so great.

ITA... I graduated from Suffolk over 10 years ago. It has really built up and the campus looks gorgeous now. My professors were excellent. I'll say I prefer Suffolk over SUNY Old Westbury where I got my BS degree.

Its good. I transfered to Nassau community and had a much better experience. I have never taken the non credit courses though, I hear they are very popular and fill up quickly!

Re: Suffolk County Community college?
Not to jump on the topic (sorry!) but how easy is it for someone to get a scholarship, if they are older w/a 4 year degree and going "back to school" to get a different one?

There aren't too many scholarships for community colleges, but tuition is low and financial aid is available. You could look into private scholarships, but not many are offered through the school. You wouldn't believe the number of students with 4-year degrees returning for nursing. That in particular is such a popular area now.

Re: Suffolk County Community college?
Tuition is actually fairly pricey (compared to cc in CA at least, and the amount of money i have). I already have a student loan and don't want to be in any more debt. Thanks fr the info!

It's $1,688 a semester. I did a lot of counseling of CC students, and many were able to make that money waitressing at nights during the summer. If it's important to you, it could be worth it. GL!
