Suffolk Legislature votes to ban sale of drop-side cribs

http://www.newsday.com/long-island/nassau/suffolk-legislature-votes-to-ban-sale-of-drop-side-cribs-1.1520249

...
The measure was approved unanimously with no debate after Horsley detailed that the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled more than 4.2 million faulty cribs between 2005 to 2008 and said the cribs caused 90 deaths between 2003 and 2005, making them the most dangerous child product on the market.

Michael Dwyer, executive director of the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, said that new voluntary standards for cribs, including elimination of drop-side equipment, is scheduled to come up before the American Society of Testing and Materials Wednesday and compliance could come within six months. He added that proposals for new federal crib rules are expected in August.

He said a patchwork of local laws was "an ineffective way" to resolve the issue. "What will keep a parent from driving across town and purchasing a drop-side crib from a children's store in another . . . county?" he asked.

Horsley's measure bans any infant crib with three immovable sides and a fourth that moves up and down. The legislation does not affect drop-gate cribs in which the crib side remains stationary, but the top part of one side folds down outside the crib for easy access.

County Executive Steve Levy favors the measure but must hold a public hearing first. Spokesman Mark Smith said the hearing could come as early as Oct. 27.

Re: Suffolk Legislature votes to ban sale of drop-side cribs

Speaking as a mom who is barely 5 feet tall, this worries me. I could not reach into the crib to get my DD out if I hadn't put the rail down. I understand the safety concerns but I don't know how I will reach my baby without using a stepstool with one of the new cribs.

I am 5' 2" and I had the same problem with DD was smaller. I mean I understand why they are banning them, but what are us short people supposed to do?

Is this all cribs? Ones with the side that you have to use two hands to pull the knobs out and lower, and the one where you can jsut use one hand to push in and lower?

What do you do if you already have this crib?

They explicitly mention that there are no plans to ban cribs where one side hinges out, giving you essentially the same end result as a drop-down, but without the safety issue.

Does the side drop down flat- or do you have to reach over it to pick up the child? Chat Icon

Re: Suffolk Legislature votes to ban sale of drop-side cribs

Im 4'11" and we initially had a drop side bc I was so short....it was recalled. We now have a stationary side crib and its fine......I can still get DS in and out of the crib. When he was an infant, I did have a little step stool next to the crib.

We didnt replace the recall with another drop side bc safety was more important than convenience.

Re: Suffolk Legislature votes to ban sale of drop-side cribs

I am only 5'1 and I am still so happy that they are banning drop-sides. I never really had that much of a hard time getting DD in and out and I would much rather struggle to get my child in and out of the crib then possibly find her trapped and dead in the crib.

Not sure about this particular one, but I'm sure there are or will be plenty that fold flat. However, I saw one comment by a parent on another site, and she mentioned how this could be a big pinching hazard, and it also gives DC a "ladder" to help them climb out of the crib with, since you need a horizontal bar across the side where it hinges.

I agree with the APs. If it comes down to convenience or DC's safety, you'll find a way to make the stationary side cribs work.

Maybe a stool on the floor next to the crib? That would put you up higher (wouldn't help if you have short arms as well, but it should help overall).

Yes, these would make it easier to reach in, but when i was shopping for a crib I could not find one like this at all. Maybe there will be more now. Also, as mentioned below, I was afraid of pinching fingers, which is certainly safer than a head caught between the mattress and the side. What I don't understand though is how children were getting their heads caught -- the mattresses come just about to the edge of the crib rail so I don't understand how heads got down between the mattress and the crib rail. Can anybody explain it to me?

ETA: and I'm sure it drops down to fold flat. My SIL had one of these and it folded down flat.

I have a drop side crib-- should I go out and buy a new non-drop side one? I am now totally freaked out! Is anyone else in the same boat?

I have a dropside too, from Bellini. In 30 years they've never had a probem. I plan to keep what I have.

Re: Suffolk Legislature votes to ban sale of drop-side cribs

Interestingly enough, I have a drop side crib from Bellini. I wrote to their customer service and this is what they sent back to me...a copy of the letter they sent out to all thir stores. Read below!

However, I plan on keeping my dropside Bella crib:) In 30 years of buisness they've never had a recall on any cribs!

Dear Bellini Stores,

Suffolk County has just voted to ban all sales of Drop Side Rail Cribs. JPMA and the Federal government have not made a determination. You may start getting requests for modification of our cribs from your customers.

If you get a call, please have the customer look at the ends of the crib side rail, where the side rail meets the crib sides. See if there is a hole drilled in the middle of this end piece of the side rail. If there is a hole already drilled, a screw can be inserted to make the rail stationary. This will not effect the conversion of the crib to a bed.

Many of our cribs were sent out with the extra screws. If the customer does not have the screws and does not want to go to their local hardware store themselves, we will be able to send them to them. The cost would be $10 to cover shipping & handling.

If there are no holes predrilled, we can send someone from our service dept for a fee of $95. He will determine whether to drill the holes or use an “L” bracket to secure the side rail.

Bellini has our cribs constantly tested and has never had a problem. There has never been a recall on any Bellini Crib. Our side rail system is the best in the industry. Do not be concerned that it moves up and down.

Bellini has been in business for 30 yrs making the finest moveable cribs very successfully. There has never been a problem with Bellini Cribs
