Summer Camp for a 5 YO
I know it's the dead of winter but the good camps get booked fast. Do you think 5 is too young for summer camp?
FWIW DD also has the option of staying with her sitter who's been watching her since she was an infant for the summer. I'm torn. Part of me thinks she will have a great time at summer camp doing trips, activities, etc but the other part of me feels she's a little young. Paying the sitter vs. paying the summer camp is the same price so do you think 5 is too young? I kind of feel like summer for kids is to relax and unwind. The sitter does take her places and does lots of playdates so it's not like she will be bored but then the other part of me thinks summer camp will be a great change, time to be around new kids, new adventures, etc.

No I do not....summer camp is a great experience. Cloe will be 5 in May.. This will be her second year at a full time 8-5 5 day a week camp.She loves it...
My son, Jacob also started at age 4. He is now 8 going on year 5... Next year I have to think about sleep away...

I've alway done a camp program for my dd starting at 3 through her preschool. The summer before K we did a day camp 9-2 5 days a week & this year we're doing full day 3x's a week.
I'm also most likely starting my will be 3 y/o in a 2 day a week camp pgm too.
FYI we only do 6 weeks because of family vacations

Definitely not too young. My DS loves camp and looks forward to it. Plus I lie that it keeps him on a "school day" schedule, so it's not so hard to adjust again in the fall.

Dc will be 5 in the fall. I'm sending him to a smaller town camp ( in a school) . I think he is too young for the very large camps. He gets hot and cranky real fast. Depends on the child, he is going 3 times a week, 5 hours a day

Thanks everyone. Still debating on what to do. Going to check out two camps one large and one small and take it from there.

My DD is 4 and I too find it a bit young for camp. However, I have to accept that in LI, most kids attend camp. So if you dont go to camp your child could be possibly very bored and lonely over the summer. If you are sure she can be occupied, skip camp. But in my case, I have no choice but to find something that works b/c we dont have enough kids to associate with often enough and any kids we do associate with GO TO CAMP! So that's that. Maybe find something part time, instead of an all day thing. That's the happy medium IMO.

My 5 year old son is going to the same camp he has gone to for the past two years. He really enjoys it. DD misses the age cut off for camp so I am going to take her to a few activities (dance, yoga, art, swimming, soccer or karate). Around here everyone send their kids to camp or goes on long vacations.

Personally, I'm not into summer camp at this age. The kids have the whole school year to be on a rigid schedule on their own. I love the freedom of the summer to do new and fun things with the kids every day without being confined to the weekends. Especially at this age when the kids are just as happy to spend time with family as they are with friends. We do some summer classes and sport camps for a week at a time but, that's the extent of it. Otherwise it's parks, the beach, museums, zoos, acquarium etc etc. We do this with friends and family so the kids aren't alone either. I feel you only have a few years where this will work before they want to be in a camp like setting with their friends.
From your post it seems you are not home with your DC but, your nanny can do all of the above. That makes it a tougher decision.

I agree with this. Don't see the need. We do a ton of fun things in the Summer. My kids are rarely bored.

Same in my area, seriously no kids!! That really is the reason I put dc in 3 days.

I agree with this. Don't see the need. We do a ton of fun things in the Summer. My kids are rarely bored.

This is what worries me and actually what DDs sitter brought up. They are in school rigid schedule 9.5 months in a year. She's only 5 summer should be to relax. Still undecided. Thanks everyone for the input. Good to hear input from both sides.

I personally don't see it like that. If your DC will have fun in camp, I don't see any harm in it being a schedule. They are having fun, not studying. My DD would absolutely prefer to be in a camp, based on the fact that any kids we do know are busy all summer with camp! But if your DC will be busy and having fun with kids, then sure, camp is not a need.

This is so strange to me! I can honestly say that not a single one of DS or DD's friends attend a typical "camp" for the whole summer! Some kids will do a sports camp for a few hours a day a week long but that is the extent of it! I guess it depends on the area...around us, country clubs and summer houses are the norm - not camp. We never have an issue of having friends to play with, take classes with, etc.

It def depends on the neighborhood. Some have kids around, some are like ghost towns in the summer

Omg everyone goes to some type of camp. Parks are a ghost town.I have no choice if I want my dc to have a fun summer. I wish it wasn't that way, but where I live, it is.
