Summer/Day Camp for children with autism
Does anyone know of one in the area?
It's for a 5 year old, I believe.
Thanks for correcting my terminology!

Re: Summer/Day Camp for autistic children
I know of a camp that serves chicldren with special needs called Camp Ramapo. I think it is a sleep-away camp upstate. Some of the students in my school have been campers there and they are on the PDD spectrum.

Re: Summer/Day Camp for autistic children
Holy expensive Camp Ramapo! It looks like a great place though!
I really wish that LI had more day camps for children with special needs. The only program I know if is through the Town of Brookhaven from 9-12 and the child must be in a self contained classroom. I was going to sign DS up one year, but his teacher said that it's really geared toward children that have very severe needs.

Re: Summer/Day Camp for autistic children
What is the functioning level of the child??
My daughter attends Camp Kehilla. It is for children with special needs. The camper needs to be able to handle a 3:1 camper ratio. It is run through the JCC...Nassau residents would call Sid Jacobsons and Suffolk residents would contact Eileen at the Suffolk Y JCC in Commack.
My daughter also attended a camp for children with Special Needs run through the Town of Huntington. At the time it was free. It is usually held at one of the elementary schools in Commack.
Feel free to FM me for any further info.

Re: Summer/Day Camp for autistic children
If I'm not mistaken...I think the "I am I can" program runs a summer camp. At least they used to ...it's worth a google to find out. The program is for high functioning kids with neurobio disorders Asperger's, ODD, ADHD etc) not just children with Autism

Re: Summer/Day Camp for children with autism
Thank you! I am going to pass this info on to the family friend who needs it (people think I know everything about education. lol). If I have more questions I will surely ask!
(ETA: I didn't mean to offend, I have family members and employees who work with children w/autism and use the other less PC terminology. They don't live in the area though)

Re: Summer/Day Camp for children with autism
DH used to work at Camp ANCHOR, they have a summer program in Lido Beach and they also have a winter after-school program.
If the family has questions I am sure he'd be happy to answer them if he can (its been a few years since he worked there).
There is a website with some information: Camp ANCHOR Online
Feel free to FM me!

I passed on the names, though she lives in Forest Hills and I don't think she has a car.

Re: Summer/Day Camp for children with autism
Camp Anchor is great but most of my students have to be on the waiting list for a few years before they get in. Only a few have gotten in quickly. Another student of mine went to Camp Kehilla last year and liked it. He was 6 at the time. Kidz Therapy might have some day programs to look into.
