Summer Home in Catskills
DH and I want to get a summer home in the Catskills or nearby -- so we can go on the weekends. We're looking for lots of land, on a lake ... small house or property with utilities installed so we can build...Any suggestions?????
Or know how I can find out about properties for sale?
I know nothing about the Catskills, but we do want somewhere not to far from LI, commutable to NYC if necessary, and not high taxes!!

Re: Summer Home in Catskills
You could buy near one of the ski areas in Hunter or Windham. You could then consider renting out the space in the winter.

Re: Summer Home in Catskills
Kara- I know you said you want the Catskills but my ILs looked in the Catskills and found "more for their money" in the Poconos- and, I think it's a little shorter drive from LI. I'll ask them though about where they looked in the Catskills for you. We saw their home in the Poconos- new construction- beautiful- in a community with pools, three lakes and lodges...

Re: Summer Home in Catskills
Kara,
you can buy property in the area we have in the Poconos, and build, or buy something. There are homes up for sale all the time. OR plan a wkend to come up and stay w/ us and then look around. We are going tomorrow, I can see if there are any 4sales around near us. The land next to us was bought and this summer a guy was building his vacation home...And we have a pool, lake, club house w/ a bar, and paddle boats and canoes...We used the pool this summer and it was nice.

Re: Summer Home in Catskills
My family has a house in Indian Lake, its beautiful there but it's north of Albany and I'm not sure how far north you want to go. It's about 5.5 hrs away.
Poconos are beautiful, I love them...and only 2.5 hrs away! DH and I go once a year to a bed and breakfast place, I love it.

I personally like areas around Woodstock, Phoenicia, New Paltz, Walkill... Totally beautiful up there. The houses in the town of New Paltz are a little expensive- but otherwise you can get al ot outside of town for not so much $$$.

Re: Summer Home in Catskills
Hmmm Poconos may be a good idea, but ...isn;t the traffic usually horrendous? It was when we went last year -- what weekend was that Sandra, do you remember? Anyway it was a holiday weekend and it took us FOREVER to get there!!
We are looking to get 5+ acres..... that would be great if you let me know if you see anything Sandra!! Do you pay taxes or a Community fee where you are?

Kara--
Holiday time is always tough, but we kinda of got to a science now...was it labor day wkend we were up there? Yes, we pay a community fee--$400 a year. There are taxes on the house. Scott was thinking of having someone buy a "share" of the house. Where one month "they" pay the mortg and utilities, and the next month we do...they would have to buy into the house....Reasoning, we do not utilize it enough and we don't want to sell it. We don't want to rent it out either, say you & Bill and Ebony wanted to rent it for a week or weekend, that would be fine. We would rent to you b/c we trust you-there is a selective few that we trust...And we only would charge rent for it b/c of the electric heat expense......If you and Bill want to rent it one weekend, let me know....then use that wkend to look around a 15/20 mile vicinity and meet a broker....We do $300 for a wkend (fri/sat/sun)...The hoiday week in Feb is already booked. Scott's co-worker is paying $2200 for a weekend in January for a condo near the ski mountain....which we are approx. 5+ min from. It is near enough but far away enough to get away....

Re: Summer Home in Catskills
IMO for the Poconos the key is leave EARLY. We get up and get on the road really early, get there in 2 hrs sometimes and have breakfast when we get there.

Sure, any time.....there is even a bus from there that goes into NYC each morning for commuters....let Bill know that
---they have spoken about a train for years, but there are issues about that- who knows if that will ever transpire.

Re: Summer Home in Catskills
I have spent my youth in the Poconos and while I love it, it doesn't hold a torch to the catskills- I find the catskills have more to offer in terms of restaurants and "civilization" and there's a certain weird crowd in the Poconos the past few years that doesn't appeal to me.
Also- I used to drive to the Poconos all the time, and the traffic is horrible whenever we drive up there, day or night (somethings DH and I drive up there for the day to buy Beef Jerky at that huge flea market- i actually used to work at that flea market when I was a teenager)... Also the whole "they are going to build a train thing" is BS- they've been saying that since I was 10 and it's 20 years later!

Re: Summer Home in Catskills
My grandparents had a house in Monticello, which has since become my Mom's. I have been going up there since I was born and it really is like my secong home. I LOVE it up there..Not all people can adjust to the quaintness of it. Back when I was younger it was BOOMING up there, today it doesnt get nearly as crowded up there in the summer, even w/ Monticello having the slots.. My grandparents waited for gambling, they nver saw it.. don't know if I ever will either, although that would be GREAT.. Sorry for the rambling, just thought I'd share Good Luck!
ETA: it takes tops 2 hrs from the city

Re: Summer Home in Catskills
No specific info but my parents own land (I believe it's 5 acres they bought when I was in the 6th grade!) in Potter Hollow/Conesville?Tannersville (I'm not sure exactly).
And DH's family has a summer house his grandparents built in Freehold.
