Summer Hours: How does your job work it?
The company I work for is going to be implimenting "summer hours" but the way they're doing it seems a little strict to me.
The details: You must come in at 8:30 (instead of 9am) Mon-Thrus and then on Friday you get to leave at 3pm.
Additionally, it's solely up to the discression of the department head which Ok, I get, but some DHs have decided that only some of their employees will be able to take advantage of the program and they can only do it if the alternate with other members of the department.
Apparently they feel someone should be here until 5 regardless. Oh and the program is starting July 7th and going until August 29th.
I've never worked for a company who did summer hours this way. What I'm familiar with is you work 9-5 M-Th and then on Friday you could leave anywhere between 12-3pm.
Is this the norm?

Re: Summer Hours: How does your job work it?
My dept doesn't have summer flex. Another dept here doesn't exactly have it either, they just get the option to work 8-4 instead of 9-5.
At DH's job, they get 32 hours of summer flex time for a set period. They may take no more than 8 hours per week at their descretion.
The rules at your place seem a little strict.

I've never heard of 9-5 M-F and Friday til 12 or 3, because that doesn't seem like you are making the time up anywhere else...?
My office does summer hours--I do 7-3 every day (as opposed to 9-5...the hours just shift earlier for summer). My office does not participate in Fridays off, though some offices do, in which case employees add on 2 hours a day M-TH for Friday off.
In my office though some of us leave early, one secretary must stay late every day because of our published hours of operation. The secretaries trade as to who stays late but the office must be open during regular hours of operation (so this sounds similar to yours).
Your office sounds pretty average compared to those I've heard about. I understand not closing the office entirely and wanting someone to be there during published hours.

Ours is similar to yours. You work with your "back up" usually the person who sits next to you, and the week that you get to leave at 1, you have to make up those 4 hours (i.e., come in at 8) and you CANNOT call in sick on a day where you were to leave at 1, you lose your privledges then.

Re: Summer Hours: How does your job work it?
I've never had summer Fridays but, all of my friends that do work longer hours during the week to get off earlier on Friday so their total hours for the week end up being the same - they are just distributed differently.

Re: Summer Hours: How does your job work it?
We have flex hours here to start with, evwn though our official open hours are 9-5. We all work anoffical 7 hours, with 1 hour for lunch ( although soem of us stya longer).
So, everyone has to add on an extra half hour M-TH, either at the beginning or end of the day, and it hads to be cleared wit the manager & it is supposed ot be consistant.
I work 9:30-5:30, so for the summer I work 9-5:30, which gives us an extra 2 hours a week.
On fridays we all work 9-1 (no lunch), which is actually 3 hours off. The company offically closes at 1, and the vpoicemail is changed ot reflect that ,. Most of our customers are not around on Fridays either, and it is not a busy time of year for us.
Other places in the same industry have done it where you could get every other Friday off entirely, so there would always be someone there, and they didn't have to make up the hours during the week.
ETA-Ours runs from Memorial day to Labor day.

Re: Summer Hours: How does your job work it?
At our company you put in an extra 15 minutes a day and get out an hour early on Friday. It was started a few years ago for summer but the president decided he liked it and kept it year-round.
It's up to each employee if they want to come in 15 minutes earlier or stay 15 minutes later.
They are pretty chintzy about the time-clock thing overall though, even if you're salaried. We work an 8.5 hour day with a half hour for lunch. You have to "declare" what your hours are (15 extra minutes early or late) and you're expected to be in or stay until the declared time. Doesn't matter that I put in an extra hour and a half on Monday in overtime, I still have to put in those extra 15 minutes Tues - Thurs. if I want to get out early on Friday I tacked on the time at the end because I never get out at the regular time anyway, so there was no way I was coming in early and still staying late.

Yeah, my company is like that too, but at least they let YOU decide when you want to work those extra 15 mins. We have no choice, we have to get in a half hour ealy and that's the end of it. I feel bad b/c there are people who cannot get in that early. They have to take their kids to school, camp, etc. and so they can never take advantage of the program.
At least if they were flexable and let us choose when we could come in or leave everyone could take advantage of what they're offering us.

Re: Summer Hours: How does your job work it?
My summer hours are Mon-Fri 9-4 as opposed to 9-5 and for July and August, I have Fridays off...There is no making up this time elsewhere...It's a perk of working where I do!

Re: Summer Hours: How does your job work it?
My company has flex hours all year round. I work 8:15-4:45 with a 45 min. lunch break. One Friday I work 8:15-12:15 and the next Friday I work 11:45-4:45. It works great for the times that I stay out late on Thursdays and want to sleep a little later.

Re: Summer Hours: How does your job work it?
I usually work 37.5 hours but during the summer- memorial - labor day I only work 30 hours a week and get to take one day off every week. I normally shift the day off I take during the week- fridays are cake at my job so I dont mind being there then. The summer hours arent available to all the staff just management- its a huge perk- it comes out to 15 extra days off.

Re: Summer Hours: How does your job work it?
We have Fridays off during July and August.
And starting last week up until end of August, we work 1 hr. less, so for most it's 9-4, but I work later some days, so 11-6 (instead of 11-7 or 9-5).
eta I work with ladybug78!!!!

Re: Summer Hours: How does your job work it?
the best i've ever had it is where i am now: 9-5:30 m-thursday and 9-5 on fridays, year round. no set summer hours, though of the people I know who do have them, it's either leave at 2pm on fridays (no makeup time) or every other friday off entirely.

Re: Summer Hours: How does your job work it?
If we work an extra hour every day, we either get 1/2 day every Friday or evero other Friday off. So I work 8am to 6pm to get every other Friday off. Normal hours are 9-6.
