we rent a house almost every summer in the OBX in north carolina. you'll probably need all the linens- sheets, towels, hand towels, beach towels, a few dish washer pods and a small thing of liquid dish soap to rinse stuff by hand. kitchen sponge, paper towels, toilet paper, hand soap for the bathrooms, maybe some paper plates and paper cups..... some kind of multi-purpose cleaning spray or whatever for wiping down kitchen counters.

We usually bring bottled water down with us when we go to the beach house and other necessities that won't perish (cereal, etc).

This is a great list. We also do the OBX.
In addition to these things if they're not provided, we bring a dog gate, a small fan,
if cooking - don't forget condiments / seasonings, chip clips can help hang things too, plastic utensils, clorox wipes for everything.

We usual pay a fee and rent linens but these is a great list.

Coffee filters is one I've learned the hard way, more than once!

Try to see what the house comes with.

My dad is particular about eggs so he brings his own frying pan. Someone else is particular about coffee and brings their own coffee pot. My dh complains about the knives, so he brings his own knives.. any other appliances we bring too, such as a blender for drinks.

We also brought laundry detergent & dryer sheets. I did our laundry our last night and folded it in the suitcases, so all I had to do when we got home was put away the clean laundry.

I do this too if the house as a washer and dryer..much more relaxing to come home with the laundry done.

I've never rented a house for vacation. But, do you feel like you're on vacation if you have to lug all that stuff with you and clean up after yourselves all week? I think I'd rather just do a staycation in those circumstances.

We don't have to clean much because we go out to eat or take out for every meal. I bring a majority of the items no matter where I go.
We only rent homes that supply almost everything.

That's my take on rental houses but some people love them. I don't want to have to even think about cooking, going to a grocery store or cleaning let alone packing all that stuff. I know people who do it every year though, so it's all just what you're into.

It's like this with my timeshare on St. John. Cleaning supplies are provided, and we get housekeeping 1 day for the week. But I bring quite a bit of food / grocery items from home, and then go to the market once there. 1 suitcase full of stuff, and each one of us carries a cooler bag with frozen / perishable items.

Upside is I'm not at home. Short taxi ride to the beach or to town.

Yeah I agree. They lost me when they said sheets and towels. I can't imagine having to pack my entire home, including condiments and salt and pepper and to remember things like coffee filters??? and then sheets, towels, linens. I have enough of a hard time and stress out for weeks just packing for a vacation at a resort.
No way would I be able to deal with that.

My thoughts exactly. But I guess some people prefer an environment that is more like a home, and enjoy cooking meals and eating in. When I'm on vacation I definitely don't want to cook or clean.

It's definitely far from staying at a resort. For me, not having to deal with restaurants with a picky kid is preferable, having room to spread out or give naps, etc are helpful when you have young kids. Some places we visit with family and there aren't really big hotels anyway (Fire island or block island for example).

We also do a road trip with 8+ families every February. Having tons of space for the kids to play and being able to put them to bed and all hang out at night is key. We all pitch in with cooking and cleaning after meals so it's easy enough. Also, its super affordable. For two nights and groceries our share is usually around $250.

for us, its more that we like to have the room to spread out with the kids- its more comfortable than being crammed into a hotel room, or even a "suite" at a resort. plus theres things like the view of the ocean, having our own private pool and/ or hot tub that kind of make your forget that you had to drag everything with you HAHA
we usually don't do too much cooking while we're there... mostly just cereal for breakfast, and sandwiches for lunch. AND usually you can pay a little bit more to have towels and sheets provided, so it all depends on what you want to do.
the people i laugh at are the ones that go to Disney, and pack a waffle maker or crockpot to use in their hotel rooms.

Um yeah, I never understood that either.
Plus isn't that a fire hazard?
I can see a whole Disney resort burning down because someone left their crockpot on too long while riding Space Mountain.
