Re: Summer Run Series
AWFUL tonight...awful! worst than the 1/2 marathon! I went to find my DH as we passed the playground at 1.5 miles to quit, but he wasn't there, so I ran the whole thing - but it was torture! 8 minutes off from last year!
How did everyone else do?

Re: Summer Run Series
It was my worst race and felt like my worst run ever.
I almost didn't do it at all because I wasn't feeling great on Sunday, but took it easy and then was determined to get through it.
I felt like crap after. Really disappointing. It was just way too hot and crowded.

Re: Summer Run Series
It was my slowest race ever, not sure if it was from the heat or the congestion of everyone. Trying to get through to the boardwalk was horrible and that hill. It seems like many people walk it. I personally thought cow harbor was a much harder race just my opinion though. But this race took me 1hr 4mins, I don't think I have ever ran a 10mins something sec overall miles before. Even cow harbor I think i was done somewhere between 52 & 54mins. But on a brighter side my son did great! It was the longest run he has ever ran and didn't stop once, even ran the entire hill then he jogged in place until I caught up. It was my slowest race but the BEST because my son and I ran the entire thing (he sprinted at the last mile) and we talked the entire time. We hardly get 5mins together so it was nice that I had a whole hr Any tips for next wks race???

Re: Summer Run Series
Can I still sign up for individual races that are showing full (Bethpage, Hempstead)? Like if I show up the day of, can they add me on? TIA!

Re: Summer Run Series
I'm not sure what they are going to do. They may say it's full, but still have numbers to give out. I'm pretty sure this is the first year that races filled up (I remember they were always trying to get to 2000 runners and at Sunken Meadow, last week, hot, humid and hazy there were 2100 and that wasn't sold out.
the worst case scenario would be that you bandit the race.
on a side note - I won the raffle at Heckscher! I got a big package in the mail with a beach towel, tote, frisbee, keychain, pen and $40 GC to super runner shop! I thought you had to be there to claim it - apparantly not!
tonight seems like it is going to be just as bad as last week - I'm hoping for rain!

Re: Summer Run Series
They say there is no single race registration for Caumsett, Hempstead, Belmont and Bethpage but I wonder if you show up day-of what they would say/do... Although I don't know that I would risk it unless it was a race close to home.
I guess every Monday is going to be unbearably hot and humid now!! Ugh. I'll be hoping for rain as well. What do they do if there is lightning?

Not sure, but I guess if the race starts - they keep going - I'm pretty sure I saw lightning at Heckscher - but that could have been over the ocean.
I was at centerport Beach today and it was so nice and cool - hopefully Caumsett has similar weather.

Re: Summer Run Series
blech - 2:30 slower than last year
I would say it was b/c I went to bootcamp in the morning and was at the beach in the afternoon, but I really have to say that one of the main reasons for this is people lining up where they are not supposed to be. I was lined up between 7 and 8 min and three women (who didn't look like they were in shape, but I thought I shouldn't judge) came in next to me. the one who looked the worst shape said, "let's go up to 7." So I watched them at the start. The one who said let's move up didn't even RUN at the start! I was so mad. Then I ran passed her friends who were jogging and I was only at a 9:00 pace, since it was so crowded! They must have been running at a 10:00+ pace. I was really mad. There were so many people and the trail was so narrow it was impossible to get around people, but if we were all at the same pace, there wouldn't be a need to get around people! KWIM?
Next week I'm lining up closer - I'm sick of being the goood one.
ETA: I saw the weather this morning and saw that this monday is going to be hot and humid again. I thought about what Meg said about every Monday being like that - thankfully there is no race this week!

Re: Summer Run Series
I had another bad race, but I think it was from something I ate! Around the 1 mile mark my stomach started to hurt, and the pain was so bad by around 2.3 miles I had to stop and just walked back to the bathrooms/car.
I have never bailed on a race before but I was in bad shape. Maybe I had a touch of the stomach bug that has been going around, and running in the heat/humidity just brought it on stronger...
I was laughing too when I saw the forecast for this coming Monday! I am hoping that the next race has nicer weather and I can get back on track. Having a bad race at Sunken Meadow then getting sick at this one has put me in a bit of a funk.
Erica - I heard EVERYONE around me saying they were lining up at a pace marker that was at least one minute faster than what they run, and on some level I get that I guess, but when the races are this crowded I too found it annoying. I just looked for an open space to start.

Re: Summer Run Series
I seriously wanted to yell when passing people "you are not running 7 min miles! but I held myself back - I guess I will just go up for the next one.
I ran a race at the beginning stages of a stomach virus. I was walking up a hill to get to the finish line and of course my running club president comes by and starts yelling to finish. It took everything I had to not tell him to F off! Hope you are feeling better!

i hate the pace markers, no one lines up where they are supposed to be, and i do. i am not ashamed to admit i run a 10 minute mile, but when i line up at 10 min, im like the only one there! and im passing people left and right when we start.

I wish that they would take a little time and give out bib numbers according to pace and not last name. I don't think it would be so hard to do. Granted late signups might have different bibs - but that's a con of signing up late.

Re: Summer Run Series
I think they probably don't have the manpower or resources to break everyone into groups. The way they do it at Cow Harbor is so much more efficient but that's a race with about 5,000 people!
I find the pace marker I am supposed to be at then look for the closest "space" around it where I feel like I won't be packed in - sometimes it's a little in front, sometimes a little behind. I just hate the herd of cattle feeling...
And thanks - I am feeling better!

Re: Summer Run Series
Can we seriously not have a monday night that is not like death? I thought tonight had potential, until everyone started lining up and then it was like a brick wall of humidity.
I didn't do as bad as the last 2 races, but I didn't get my A goal.
Please, please, PLEASE be cooler and less humid next week!
ETA: the 10 day forcast is saying upper 80's and 75% humidity

Re: Summer Run Series
It seems that every time the temperature drops the humidity goes up making it just as uncomfortable! Although I will take tonight over the other races.
The short race helped too! I was hoping to shatter my personal best pace on such a short race, but I only did slightly better which considering the distance isn't really much.
I think next week is Belmont, right? Is that a nice course? And at this point I just assume the weather will be oppressive!

Re: Summer Run Series
Belmont is nice, since there is some dirt running (less pounding)
last night only had 1500 people...I was much happier at the start! I actually moved up to the beginning of my minute pace and didn't have one complaint - I guess everyone is doing that!

I am not running the summer series (as I am not on LI), but this happens to me during every big race I do. I did the corporate challenge last year and went in the 7 minute mile and everyone in front of me was walking. This year, I said no way am I getting stuck behind those people again, so I went up to the 6 minute miles and then very few people passed me and I was able to get a good start. Then this year, I did the Freihofer's women race and they had finish times as the markers. I went between 21:00 and 21:46. I thought perhaps people do not understand pace, but the understand finish times. Nope! At this point, I just start like a minute faster than I should, which more or less puts me near the start.
What I wish people woudl understand is IF you started in the correct position then there would not be this back up.

Re: Summer Run Series
I definitely enjoyed the smaller crowd and relatively wider course!!
I am not a fast runner by any means, so when I line up I tend to try to find an open spot in the crowd between my fastest pace and my slowest pace.
Sometimes closer to my fastest (or goal), sometimes closer to my slowest - I'd just rather not feel claustrophobic!! I'd never go up front though, but I certainly see people who push their way up before the start and I wind up passing them even at my slow pace!

Re: Summer Run Series
Megan, I don't know if you know Jose. He is an older gentleman (71), but he looks about 10 years younger. He is always in his green Brentwood uniform and at like EVERY race on LI and everyone knows him. He lined up next to me last night (7 min/mile) and I looked to see his time - 8:42/mile! So now I feel good about moving up a little...I was almost a min/mile faster than him!
My sister is slower and she lined up a minute faster and felt the start was so much better too. I hate to be part of the problem...but it's just ridiculous!
I love NYRR races, b/c your bib has your pace automatically on it!

Re: Summer Run Series
Checking in! Last night wasn't so bad... until it was time to leave. I can't help but think that plotting a race course on the road that is the only entrance/exit to the park is not the best idea...
After we ran (my dad and I do the races together) we went right to the car hoping to beat the rain and wound up sitting there for nearly an hour!
Did anyone else manage to get out quickly? I felt like we were being punished for getting there early - the latecomers were parked right by the exit!!
