Summer time baby with 4 year old

I was wondering for all the BTDT mommies that have had their second child in the summer time, what did you do with your older child? This could be a silly question but it's really on my mind. I wouldn't want to deprive my older one of all the summer fun but would be afraid to take the baby outside for long periods of time due to all the sun and bugs.

Any tips or tricks you used so your older child was able to have a fun summer? We don't have the funds to send her to a day camp, I am a stay at home mom.

Part of me is thinking of holding off on TTC so I don't have to worry about this.

I had my 2nd in August. My first was just shy of 3 at the time. I took him outside in the backyard to play and kept the baby covered on the deck. We did hold off on places like the beach and pool with the newborn...but my parents took him places like that while I stayed home with the baby, so he was still able to do "summer" things. I personally wouldn't hold off on TTC because of something like that.

Have you tried those bug type covers for the stroller/infant carrier? If so did they work good to keep the mosquitoes away from the baby?

Re: Summer time baby with 4 year old

I just had my second in July. DS was 3.5. He still went to daycare/preschool 3 days per week. When he was home, there were times we played in the backyard while DS2 slept in a bouncer inside. DS2 was right near the screen door so I could hear him if he cried. We'd also go to the park a lot. I had a light blanket over the carseat to protect him from the sun and bugs.

DS was 2 when Brayden was born in July. I kept him in daycare part time so he can do the summer activities outside. I think it's easier b.c you can bring the baby outside for fresh air and spend time with your 4 yr old. Put on the bug cover that looks like a net, dress the baby in light clothes and out them in the shade. I did a lot of walks early in the morning when it's cooler outside. The baby napped s lot outside too bc of the fresh air. I think it's easier than the middle of winter and more germs going around.

DS turned 5 in August, a few weeks before his sister was born. We went to the pool a lot. I did lots of playground in the spring, or the morning or night. If DH or somebody else were available, they took him places. We went to the Gateway theater, movies, kids playplaces, library, etc once it got really hot. He also enjoyed building forts in our Central AC and board games. There really is a lot to do.

I never had one of those nets. Never really thought about mosquitoes actually! She was fine.

Thanks for all the answers everyone, you guys definitely are making it seem doable. I guess I was making it a lot worse than it would be in my mind lol

I have the same concerns. Just found out I'm expecting number 3 in June. I think I will switch my kids to part time at school, or put them in various camps (like a gymnastic camp for a weeks, swim classes, dance classes, etc). I also want to get some fun outdoor toys for our yard--a new kiddie pool, sandbox, sprinkler. I'm a little worried about stuff like the beach, but maybe I'll have my folks watch the baby after about 6 weeks for 3 hours or so so that I can take my other two to the beach. I thought about waiting to have a Sept/Oct baby, but I figured I would then be very paranoid about my kids bringing home those fall/winter germs with a newborn. So, I let nature decide for me. We'll figure it out!
