Supplemenatal Insurance

All:

If anyone has any details on an insurance company that covers IF meds (particularly injectables) that you could post or FM me, I would appreciate it.

We both have coverage, but mine doesn't cover fertility meds of any kind. Boosh is looking to see if hers does.

We could cover it OOP for a little while, but it would be tight, so if there is a way to streamline it, that would be awesome.

This would be something like "cobra" I would think.

Re: Supplemenatal Insurance

this is something I've come across in my research but not sure if it's legit or not

maternity card
scroll down to the last plan

as for meds depending on your insurance you may be covered for more than you think - definitely work with a pharmacy specializing in IF drugs. In Manhattan I used Metro drugs but there are many online also.
also the pharmacy can sign you up for prescription RX (I think that's the name) and it's a free discount plan you can be part of. I've also thought it best to call around, some of my meds varied in price at different places.

also ask your RE/nurse, many couples donate unused meds, it's good karma.

Re: Supplemenatal Insurance

I have been told by freedom pharmacy that I am covered - but until my insurance company confirms it in writing I won't believe it. In the meantime note that there is a website www.ivfmeds.com , where you can buy from the UK at a cheaper price. Also http://www.freegaragesale.com/medical.htm

I would suggest you each consult with the benefits manager in your own HR departments since they should have the most accurate and complete info. According to my insurance web site we were covered, but since it is managed care, turns out we weren't. You need to be a rocket scientist but I say, the generalist is getting paid to figure this stuff out for you.

Re: Supplemenatal Insurance

already spoke to my company and they do not cover ANYTHING to do with fertility

boosh's company does cover it, but only if the company wants it. Since her company is small with older people, they elected not to have it

Re: Supplemenatal Insurance

If you have medication coverage in general you should be covered under the NYS mandate for IF treatments ( med and IUIS) unless you work for a union, federally funded company or company with less then 50 employees.

private industry is NOT excluded from the law. I think they may be misinformed. Call your insurance carrier and ask specifically if you are covered under the NYS infertility mandate and if you are excluded...for what reason.

I have been in insurance for a long time and the only exceptions are companies based outside of ny, unions, federally funded companies and catholic charities or groups under 50.

Your HR person is not going to know as much as the insurance company does.

If you are covered by any insurance for the NSUH visit ( which they always bill as diagnosis of infertility) then you are covered under the mandate . this is of course if you get your regualr RX coverage thru that same insurer.

eta- most comapnies when you ask about "fertility" , they automatically assume you mean the "rider" which is a seperate package purchased to cover IVF( and very expensive) .

Re: Supplemenatal Insurance

somethings not right in my honest opinion.

I would keep asking. It doesnt sound right at all.

I would call the insurance myself and ask. Am I covered under the nys infertility mandate. Flat out.

Before paying OOP for it. My injectables ran me around $4K a month, you shouldnt have to pay that.

You really have to fight to get the right answers unfortunatly. Chat Icon

ETA_ but my insuarance covered my injectables.....

i just spoke with our insur (cigna- HMO) and they told me they cover artificial insemination (although we would have to pay $200 for the co-pay out of pocket) and fertility drugs which are pills (clomid, etc). they do NOT cover injectibles or IVF

Re: Supplemenatal Insurance

I use Schrafts Pharmacy...Nothing is covered for me either (Dh's company elected not to have fertility coverage).

If you go to DesignRX.com and sign up you will get a discount on certain drugs.

Yes, the discount is for certain injectibles...I believe its for Follistim. I can't remember exactly how much, but it was a nice discount.

Schrafts aslo has some "club" you can join for $12 a year that gives you a small additional discount, and with what I am going through it paid off.

Re: Supplemenatal Insurance

She should also call her company's insurance. My boss didn't think we had fertility coverage, but when I called Empire I had unlimited IUI's and a percentage off of the drugs when I ordered them through Freedom...no discount at all if I bought them locally, which I had to do a couple of times.
Apparently, NYS insurance companies have to do some sort of infertility coverage - either IUI's or IVF - I only stopped the IUI's cuz I couldn't afford the copays ($50) every other day.
