Supplemental psych eval for non-verbal toddler?

DS is scheduled for a psych eval (therapist is concerned about PDD/NOS) next week. He is 2, and not yet speaking.

What should I expect from the eval? How do they evaluate a non-speaking toddler? Is it just watching to evaluate?

Thank you--I want to be prepared. Chat Icon

They look at their play skills, which involves their socialization. They also look at how they interact with the evaluator and the parents and how they communicate non-verbally.

From what I remember from DS's eval, which was right after he turned 2, the psychologist came in, sat down and opened up her bag of toys and tried to entice DS to play with her. After a little while, she went through a checklist with DH and I, asking if he did this or that and taking notes.

mainly through play and interaction with their parents and the evaluator. remember do NOT encourage or interfere with the evaluation.

sit back and watch and let your child come to you if they want or need you.

DS had his done at about 17 months

Through direct interaction with the child (play, toys, talking, etc..)

They may do ADOS

DS is non verbal so I answer their questions also to fill in the blank. I suggest on that part that you are truly objective about it. State facts. You might want to make mental notes or write down what DC does or does not do. It's easier to answer.
