survived our frist trip to the ER for Shaun....BTDT moms of croup isues please come in

I have never been so terrified in my life. Shaun woke up crying early Saturday morring at about 2am. I picked him up and was about to gave him to DH so I could make him a bottle. Within a few seconds we realized he was wheezing really bad....a sound I NEVER want to hear ever againChat Icon I started to panic because he wouldn't stop. It was horrible I thought my baby was having an asthma attack.Chat Icon So we quickly drove him to the ER...it was the longest ride of my life. All I could think of was "what if he stops breathing- I wouldn't know what to do." I ran into the ER and they took us right in. By that time his wheezing had eased up. Turns out he had the croup. It was sooooo scary. I was convinced it was some sort of asthma but his lungs were clear.

Any moms have experience with the croup? What have you found works best for your child? I'm still rattled from the experience Chat Icon

The sounds of croup are the worst.

We use the humidifier all the time, put her in the shower with the steam and the fresh air works good also.

Did they give you the steriods for it?

Usually it lasts about 7-10 days. The doctors say it sounds worse than it actually is. Even though when you hear that sound its of no consulation. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes you'r eright - it really is a terrible sound.
They gave him some sort of oral meds in the hospital.... and our ped gave us steroids. I'm hoping its over because I haven't "that" cough again. Chat Icon

It will get worse at night. The steriods help to open up the airways. I hope he's better soon. Chat Icon Chat Icon

DS had the croup at 16 months - labored breathing etc etc. Took him to the ped and they gave me a script for an oral steroid. He took that but he was still as bad the next day so they have him a shot of the same steroid and the nebulizer and that worked.

It was scary as I thought his body was working so hard to breathe what if it could not keep goingChat Icon I barely slept for 3 days but he came out of it and he is fine.

I did lots of steam showers with him and just gave him 100% of my attention.

DS has had croup about 5 times. We were told that it's his body's reaction to a cold. DD never got it since her body reacts differently.
Just be aware that it is most likely to happen again. We have given DS steroid treatment about 3 out of the 5 times he had croup. Scary - yes!!
Hope he feels better!

DS gets it once or twice a year, but never as bad as what you described. We use the nebulizer with albuterol, and within a day it breaks up the cough.

Re: survived our frist trip to the ER for Shaun....BTDT moms of croup isues please come in

croup is really scary! Both kids JUST had it (DD is 4 1/2 and DS is 15 months).. and DD had it quite a few times before... this is what I know:

1) get a nebulizer- ask the doc if s/he will write you a script and have the albuterol on hand- that way at 2am you can neb and it should help a bit.
2) hot showers- work wonders- put on the hot water and close the door and sit and steam.. we have an automatic fan in our bathroom- so we sit in the dark and bring a flashlight- the kids like this.
3) cold air- either go outside (wrap kid in blanket) or stick their head in the freezer.. the combo of steam & cold air will help the vocal chords- which is where the croup sound comes from.. not the lungs, which is why they were clear.
4) this past time both kids were prescribed a prednisone (sp) syrup.. it seemed to help, but even though the croup cough went away, a regular cough lasted for about 1 1/2 weeks after...
5) you don't need to go to ER unless your child's chest is sort of sucking in while they are trying to breathe

edited to say the croup sound is the WORST sound in the world... i remember the first time Maddie had it we were almost one foot out the door to the ER... but I saw she was breathing OK and I just had an idea it was croup (probably from you lovely ladies).. now you know what it is, you'll be able to deal with it!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon So sorry u had to go thru that!!! Its so scary!
Glad everythings ok. William had croup at 3 months old and ugh it was terrifying!!!
I remember taking him out of the bassinette in the middle of the night wrapping him up nice and warm and sitting outside with him - it helped instantly.
We also have a nebulizer at home bc he wheezes when he gets a cold - maybe ur dr can give u a script for one so u have it home. - its a little peace of mind knowing u have it.

we also used the cool mist humidifier in the room every night.

Hope shaun recovers asap and mom and dad are doing better after that scare! Chat Icon

everything she said

MY DS had a bad case of the croup and we were in the NICU at Winthrop for 2 days it was the scariest 2 days I have been through!!!

He had that barking cough...throughout the night..and he was so restless couldnt get comfortable I went to change his diaper and his chest was concaving...like you could put your WHOLE fist into his chest..I didnt think it was possible to concave that much!! I was hysterical..he was so lethargic and not really crying..but def gasping for air!

I called 911 and the ambulance came right away. They gave him steroids and nebulizer treatments..he was getting them every hour for the first couple of hrs when the nurse said usually you can get 4 hours out of it...and we knew when it was time for another dose bec his chest wold begin to concave again

Now I know to never let it get that bad EVER AGAIN! I didnt knw anything!! SCARY!!

Now I have a nebulizer with Albuterol on hand and liquid/oral steroid at all times. I give him a treatment anytime I hear that barking seal cough starting to come on...and knock on wood...I have never had that problem get that severe ever again...This happened last july and have probably had to give the Albuterol 4 more times since then,...but it goes away after the one treatment and the chest has never concaved again THANK GOD!!

I thought the same as you..I was shocked each time that his lungs were clear...but these are totally unrelated...it is further up in his airways! I thought for sure he was going to develop asthma from this...but knock on wood...

Good luck! Hopefully you will not have this happen again and if you do you catch it inthe early phases like I learned! Very scary!

Hope your DC feels better ASAP!

Re: survived our frist trip to the ER for Shaun....BTDT moms of croup isues please come in

My DD had what they call spasmodic croup - turned very pale couldn't make sounds, could breath but had bad stridor and wheezing etc. She couldn't even cry the 1st time it happened. I luckily had a video monitor b.c the sounds she made were like that of just fussing in her sleep. I immediately called our ped (he didn't have a service so he answered his own calls at night) - I thought we would be on the way to the ER - but he 1st had us put her in the bathroom with the shower on HIGH. After about 10 mins she was able to cry again and her color was returning etc. Then the cough started. Very scary - but we were able to control it with steam from hot showers, high humidifier on 24 hours a day in a small room, and musinex to keep any mucus thin so it didn't interfere with the swelling. My ped wasn't big on steroids unless they were last resort.

DD got croup I would say about 6-10 times in 1 year (she got it from allergies not a virus). Then she just suddenly outgrew it around 2 and hasn't had any issues since. I learned that sometimes after walks or the playground to listen to her she would get a little rattling/wheezing sounds and I would immediately start our routine so I was able to control it.

I have to say the 1st time was VERY scary. Luckily DD#2 has not had this yet.

My parents dealt with this for a LONG time with both of my brothers...a bunch of trips to the ER for the older of the two....my youngest brother had it more mild. They both outgrew it though.

Running a steamy shower and then taking them out into cold air seemed to help.

Ughhh....poor you, DH and your baby!!!! croup sounds horrible....I hate it. DD is 15 months and has had croup 3 times. She woke up with it Saturday...it was a mild case and we didn't even go to the dr. What helps DD the most is steam showers and then going outside right after. I also have the humidifier on when she's sleeping.

Some kids wind up with ear infections...so keep an eye out that.

It definitely sounds worst than it really is.

Hope he feels better soon

Re: survived our frist trip to the ER for Shaun....BTDT moms of croup isues please come in

DS had croup twice over the last 2 months. It's definitely scary listening to him gasp for air (stridor). Last time, it took 45 minutes to get his breathing under control.

These are all things I knew and/or were recommended to me by the on-call nurse to help with the stridor: I steam up the bathroom and we stay in there for a while. Then, I'll open the door outside so he can get some cold, fresh air. If that doesn't work, I'll give him a spoonful of honey and also some warm water. All of these things should help to break up the cough and open the airways. Last time, I needed to do 2 steam treatments. I use a humidifier. I put him in our bed and make sure he's elevated. Last time, our doctor also prescribed steroids for 2 days.

I hope your DS is doing better. Chat Icon
