SUV Recommendation - Fuel Efficiency
DH and I are buying a house up in New Paltz (YAY!!) and we work in Westchester. Right now we have an X5 but we use a quarter of a tank one way when we go from there to our office. We are ready for a second car.
DH wants a Prius because of the great gas mileage and I love big cars and being up high. I also lug around a lot of stuff with me all the time, laptop, big pocket book, all the food I will eat for a day, etc.
What are your recommendations for SUV's that are great on gas mileage?
TIA!

Hyundai just redid the Santa Fe and from what I hear, it's great on gas. Cosmetically they are comparing it to the Lexus. In case you were worried about luxury.
ETA: Toyota Highlander also comes in a Hybrid version

Re: SUV Recommendation - Fuel Efficiency
i have a 2006 toyota RAV 4 ( the new, bigger style) and i LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!! its very comfortable to drive, and really good on gas for an SUV. we went down to NC in july, and for mostly highway driving got 28 mpg at one point. for non highway driving, i still get about 24 MPG, which isn't bad either for an SUV. its very roomy when you fold the back seats down, too. DH and i just moved and ended up moving a lot of our stuff on our own in my RAV. definitely worth checking out

A Prius is plenty big to hold your laptop, purse and lunch. They're one of the most fuel efficient vehicles available in the US market and convenient, because you have to stop for gas much less often.

LOL! I reread that and it did seem silly. But it just feels like we have a ton of stuff with us all the time. Its laptops x 2, lunches x 2, my bag, our dog, our dog's stuff. We used to have a small Saturn and it just felt like we were always surrounded by our stuff in the car which is why I like it all in the back and away from me now.
He really really likes the Prius so we are definitely going to go check that out to see how it is. There are tons of Prius's up there.

Re: SUV Recommendation - Fuel Efficiency
A hybrid is ONLY a good choice for efficiency if you plan to drive mostly in traffic times or local driving. If you have a clear straight run on a parkway the hybrid will not help your efficiency.
Having said that, the Toyota Highlander is a greaty choice for a hybrid SUV. Lexus also makes a model as well.

I have a Nissan Murano and it's pretty good on gas. It's more of a station wagon on steroids than an SUV but it's very roomy. My sister has one too and she also says its pretty good on gas.

I have the Lexus non-hybrid version, but I think that I heard that they gas mileage on the hybrid is only about 7 miles a gallon? That sounded really wierd to me, especially since the price of the hybrid is so much more.

Re: SUV Recommendation - Fuel Efficiency
Also check out the Honda Civic Hybrid. The gas mileage rates 49 city and 51 Highway.
