Swimming--question, is it not effective for weight loss?
I know, simple formula calories burned > calories consumed
but I keep reading/hearing things that swimming isn't that effective for weight loss, it makes you hungrier, etc
Anyone ever lose weight swimming? I've started swimming 3x/week and hearing this kinda gets me

I can't lose weight the way I swim. I am way too slow to call it an actual work out.
I would have to do 10 full speed laps to even start feeling like I am really doing something. Like I am red face swimming. And I don't like that! So swim is not a good workout for me.

I've always heard swimming is the best excercise because it works all the muscles in your body.

Re: Swimming--question, is it not effective for weight loss?
I did very well with swimming.
I would swim at a moderate pace for 35-45 minutes 2-3 times a week.
then I would go do some machines.
that combo actually made me swim faster, longer and have stamina.
I did lose weight. I was hungrier after but there were only a few times I felt too hungry. I ended up burning 300-400 calories each workout. Wow!!

Re: Swimming--question, is it not effective for weight loss?
Swimming is great for weight loss and overall toning. But you have to actually swim and try, not just do some lazy paddling around (sort of like the equivalent of getting on a treadmill wanting to lose weight and then doing a slow stroll for 15 minutes and wondering what went wrong). You can find good swim workout suggestions online -- this will help you push yourself.
I used to be a competitive swimmer and would have two hour swim practices. I was probably consuming 3000+ calories a day and couldn't keep the weight on. There is a reason competitive swimmers eat two breakfasts a day and still look the way they do...

I ate a ton more and never gained weight. The carbs we would eat were crazy. As long as you are not just paddling around it's a great workout for every muscle in your body.

Re: Swimming--question, is it not effective for weight loss?
I definitely don't paddle around.
I swam on a swim team in middle and high school, I know it was a long time ago, but not enough for me to forget.
So I pretty much do freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and *sometimes* butterfly. I don't do flip turns anymore because I hate doing them, but I pretty much swim laps the whole time for 45 mins. Once in awhile I take a break, because I'm out of breath. Yep, I'm out of shape. LOL
