Switching licesnses
Hi all i am tenured under special ed in nyc, I am looking to move schools and have been offered a general ed position very close to home, as opposed to my current school which is about 45 min away without traffic. I would have to switch my license. I know this means getting tenured again and losing senority in the board of ed. Is this something you would be willing to do?

I'm a NYC teacher for the past 13 years. Honestly, I would never do that. I'm so sure you'll find another SE position this summer. JMHO

How were you offered a job with out certification in general education?
No, I would never leave my tenured position, BUT I know many who have.

I am not tenured, as I am up in NYC in March, however I wouldn't give it up.
I have 2 coworkers that just finished the portfolio and it looks like torture!

Hmm well my knowledge is limited & I could be way off here but.....
I don't think you lose seniority within the board of ed by working under a different license. Your years of service are still counted.
Secondly, from what I was told you won't lose your special ed tenure... you could always go back to it & be tenured & pick up where you left off if you wanted to. True that you would have to start working toward tenure under the new certification, but if you don't mind doing that, I don't think it's so bad.... and then you'll be tenured under 2 different licenses which I think is a good thing.
I could be wrong but for the shorter commute, I think I'd do it.... a general ed position is harder to find than a special ed position so if you have an offer close to home, I'd consider it.

I spoke with HR, you do lose seniority. You come in liek a new hire gen ed.. the thing is ther is a freeze on gen ed teachers so the principal would need to put in a request to have you come in.. Its really a big headache lol

Never, ever.....especially with a new mayor coming in this year, things may get shaken up a bit in the DOE and I would not want to be without tenure.
