Switching OB's - need advice on which to choose (with Poll)
I'm not on LI, so this is a more general question as to which of these two options you would choose. I kind of already had my mind made up, but DH is giving me a hard time about the one I was set on because he feels it's too far.
My normal GYN doesn't deliver any longer, so at 12 weeks they make you switch no matter what. I was looking into two options:
Option 1: the doctor is located about 15 minutes from me. The hospital she is affiliated with gets mixed reviews. People either love it or hate it. It was recently re-done but it's nothing special. The hospital itself is 20 minutes away. The doctor is VERY hard to get appointments with and so far they've only booked me with the NP. No late hours and their hours are a bit un-flexible. Other people I speak to who use her say that when not pregnant, they have to make appointments a full year in advanced.
Option 2: the doctor is located 25 minutes away (although, from work it's only 15 minutes and I plan to go a lot right from work). But she comes VERY very highly recommended and so far I haven't had issues getting appointments. She also has late hours so I can see her after work (which is a big plus with my schedule). The hospital she's affiliated with is 25 - 30 minutes away but it's one of the most highly rated in the area. People RAVE about it. I've literally not heard or read one bad thing. It's all brand new, clean, and described like staying at a "5 star hotel experience". So, much nicer than your typical hospital stay.
I'm very heavily leaning towards doctor #2, however my DH is very against the decision because of how far the hospital is from our house. His concern (this is baby #2) is that if it's a fast labor and/or we need to get there during a high traffic time of the day, we wont make it in time. I don't particularly think a 30 minute drive is all that bad and I think it's worth it. Which would you choose?

I would do 2. I live in the City, and I travel from the City to LI to see my dr. because I love their practice. You should go with the dr. and office you are most comfortable with. And I will be delivering in LI as well, and the drive is about 30 mins as well.

#2- if the hospital affiliated with the 1st dr is 20 mins, and the one affiliated with the 2nd dr. is 30 mins, I don't think 10 mins is that big of a deal

I don't think the 10 min diff in hospital diff is going to make or break your delivery. Number 2 hands down.

Living close to you - I would go with number 2 - no questions. Especially with the flexibility.
I delivered at a hospital 30 minutes away each time and had no issues (I don't think it's the one you are considering - it was more popular when I had DS 1).

Thank you for your input! For us, it's between Good Sam and Valley.

#2 as you get farther along and need more appointments you don't want it to be impossible to get and appt.

I delivered at Englewood - which was nice but, Valley is a little closer and now the "place to be". I've also heard great things about Hackensack North @ Pascack Valley. I have a good friend delivering there this summer and said it was amazing after she did the tour.

Def #2. My OB and hospital was near where I work, so about 35 min from where I live but that really didn't matter to me... I made my appointments after work and went straight from work. I don't think 30 minutes is that bad at all.

#2. My OB only delievers at a hospital over an hour away from me- in no traffic. When I get pregnant I may look to switch doctors.

my hospital is 20 mins away. It was fine. I would do #2. Getting appointments is more important. Its so stressful when I had to switch appts. and they couldn't find anything that fit my schedule

Switching OB's - need advice on which to choose (with Poll)
I have a hospital within walking distance of my house and still delivered at a hospital 30 minutes away. I preferred that doctor and the care I would receive at that hospital. My husband said something once and I told him since I was the one who was pregnant and going to the appointments and going to be in labor and I was OK with a 30 minute drive, his opinion on the subject was meaningless!

With my first, we lived in Queens and I delivered in Manhattan.
With my second, we lived about 15 miles away from the hospital. I still labored overnight at home, so more than enough time to get to the hospital.

Re: Switching OB's - need advice on which to choose (with Poll)
Hi I delivered at valley and had a good experience. I also worked in the maternity section at good Sam so I am familiar with them. I would def pick valley over good Sam. I haven't seen the new redone wing yet but I am sure the same patients will be there. When I worked there - it would get very hectic and chaotic at times. The nurses seemed fine and capable but I wouldn't feel comfortable there right after giving birth. It was just too much at times ! Can you tell me the new ob that you are thinking of going to ?

Thank you so much for your response. It's nice to have a perspective of someone who has delivered at Valley and also worked at Good Sam! This definitely made me feel confident in my choice.
I'm switching to Dr. Fallon in Park Ridge. She's part of the Valley Medical Group.
Can I ask who you used when you delivered at Valley?

SO funny - Dr. Dicker was my other choice if I couldn't get in with Fallon. I've heard phenomenal things about him. I only went with Fallon first because I prefer a female, but like I said, I hear RAVES about dicker. Thank you so much - I'm so excited now that I switched!!

I don't think a 30 minute trip to the hospital is at all unreasonable. People travel way longer daily just to get to work,
