Re: Oktoberfest??

yes i went in 2003, when i lived in germany for a year. because we werent prepared, i really didnt think it was anything special. i felt it was touristy. by prepared i mean book your hotel and the beer house you want to drink at ahead of time (at least 2 months). we couldnt get in anywhere to drink, and didnt have anywhere to sleep. i wasnt that mad, b/c i had been to munich a few times before that, and i liked it better when it wasnt oktoberfest. i love the beer gardens! i wound up staying out all nite by going to a club. if my group was prepared and had stuff planned out it would have been better.

Re: Oktoberfest??

I have to agree with Lisa. Munich is MUCH nicer and much more affordable when not during Oktoberfest. But it ends the first week in October, so you could probably go at the end of the month and still get some feeling of it, but not the absolute crazy madness.

Munich has a ton of great beer halls - when you go any time of the year, you will get that great party atmosphere; if you don't want to pay the prices and fight the crowds.

Re: Oktoberfest??

I did - the one in Munich. It was an absolute blast - a LOT of fun, dancing, meeting a lot of people and some good food too.

However it was VERY scary. There were 3 of us, all girls, and luckily we met American guys who "watched out" for us. There were men grabbing at us the entire time. Its basically a drinking fest - we hung out in one or two tents the entire time, didn't really journey to the outside. I'm sure if I went at this point in my life the experience would be different, but I was in college at the time and had the "college experience" while I was there.

It was cool watching all the waitresses carry like 8 full glasses of beer! Chat Icon

Bring lots of change if you go - you have to pay to use the bathroom. Oh and we stayed in a hostel in an old castle...I remember it was hard to find a place to stay b/c everything had been booked up. But we did finally find a place after a lot of calling around.
