I traveld with my daughter to Florida when she was teething at 8 months..a little rough, but wondering if anyone had any advice for a trip to California, she is 10 months now and she will be 13 months at the time of the trip in July...she will be walking any day now too.
Long flight? we want to drive from San Diego to San Fran...too much for 8 days??? any advice?? tips on things we can do out there? Cancel the trip Chat Icon
thanks for any suggestions..DH always wanted to see Cali and w/ his recent cancer and all he went through I want him to see Cali...is it a good idea with the baby??

Re: taking a one year old to California?

My friend just took her 2 year old and 8 month old to California last month. She said they both did really well but her 8 month old totally went with the flow...the 2 year old gave her more troubleChat Icon I say go for it.

Re: taking a one year old to California?

I would do it!

I live about an hour from San Francisco and we drive down to San Diego every few months(its our home town, we moved to Northern California because my husband is in the military). We travel with 2 toddlers and a dog and the drive never seems too bad. We have been doing that trip since the girls were a few weeks old.

I did the Sad Diego - SF drive and it was loooong. Too long for a child that age IMO unles you take at least 2 to 3 days to do the drive.

We just got back from LA with my 22 month old. At a year and a few months we took her to Spain. No problems either time - although she was definitely more difficult coming back from LA, not sure why.

Go for it.

it does seem long but its only a 7-9 hour drive depending on your driving. I actually thought aound 6- 8 months was easier than with toddlers.

We took PCH and stopped at San Juan Capistrano -- I guess that made it longer! Spent the night in Cambria, then up to Napa (which is further than SF too, isn't it?)....

Younger is easier but I think 1 is still ok -- DD travelled well up until 22 months...

I am about 20 minutes from Napa, its about 45 minutes to an hour longer, depending on traffic.

We take DD to CA all the time. She was great- the time change was a little hard but she got used to it. We actually just got back a few days ago and she did fine. But I'm not sure if I would do a drive from SF to SD. I think it's a really long drive, esp for a baby. Unless you are stopping every few hours at different places.

Re: taking a one year old to California?

Thanks so much for the stories..I wanted to hear how other people did it and that it can be done
We were planning the trip for 8-10 days, we would fly into San Diego spend a day or so..stay with a friend in LA for 3 days and then take a day to drive up to San Fran..stopping at Big Sur for a day trip to break up LA/SF...I think we are going to do it!
Just need a kick in the arse and someone to say Go for it!

Re: taking a one year old to California?

Just got back from Cali. with my DS who is 14 months. He was great on the flight. Slept for an hour during takeoff and slept for about 1 1/2 during landing time. Big problem was that he wanted to walk around. Bring lots of snacks and drinks. He whined and cried a little, but for the most part, he was a trooper. There were alot of babies on the flight too. I was alone with DS, so it was a little more difficult, but people are so nice. This businessman offered to walk up and down the aisle with DS if I wanted a 15 minute break!

It was so good to see your post! I was happy to hear and that is my biggest concern that she will be wanting to walk..what flight did you take out and come home..also what airline? I appreciate any advice and feedback, we took DD 8mo to Fl and she was teething and delayed flight on the way home but now she just wants to cruise everywhere so i am nervous..again thanks cause it was great to read that I am not crazy for trying to take DD
