taking a personal day on the 1st anniversary of a parent's death

Has anyone done this? Is it common? I am a teacher and really can't handle going to work on the first anniversary of my dad's passing. It is next month and I really want to take a personal day. Would that be odd?

That's why they are personal days - you can do whatever you want with them and no one can tell you it's odd. Take the day without any regrets Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Not odd at all. I always have a hard time on the anniversary of my mom's passing. If you know it will be a rough day for you and can take the day, do it.

I don't see an issue with it. I just know from reading here that if you aren't tenured it's not a good look to take any days or something. Maybe I'm wrong.

Sorry for your loss. :(

Not at all, I'm sure ur principal will understand. If u're up for it maybe u and ur immediate family can get together to give each other support and remember all the good memories.

I'm so sorry for ur loss, I know what it feels to lose a parent and I can def say it's one of the biggest pains ever Chat Icon

Not strange at all! I do the same and so does my husband. I also have a friend who takes the day off on the anniversary of her boyfriend's passing.

I don't think it's odd at all. I wouldn't volunteer why to your school, just take the day. That day was very hard for me for about 10 years. It's been 18 years now and the day is not so bad anymore just as an FYI so it will get better. So sorry for your loss.

11 years later I take a day for my mom's birthday. The anniversary is 3 weeks later. I do her birthday because mom was still lucid.
So sorry for your loss.

I am a big believer that you should grieve in the way that you need to. I won't even go out of my house on Mother's Day since my mom passed, and I don't really go on Facebook either because I don't want to see everything.

Nope not odd at all. We do something on my Step-Dads anniversary every year.
