Taking kids out of school for a vacation
Just curious what everyone's opinion would be. Do you think it matters about the age of the child and homework load or do think, its a family vacation and missing a few days won't stop them from getting accepted to Harvard? I have two girls 12 and 14.

Taking kids out of school for a vacation
I have a 14 year old. Personally I wouldn't let her miss more then a day (possibly 2 depending on the time of year)

Re: Taking kids out of school for a vacation
I personally don't see a problem with it. I also think other factors play in- is it during testing, do they already struggle in school, will they have work to make up etc... We go away every June before school is over. And we plan on continuing that trip until DS is of the age when he has finals that time of year. At the elementary school ago all he is missing is field day and watching movies/playing games while the teachers pack up the classroom for summer.

I have an 8th grader....I feel like she will miss a lot if I take her out for more than a day at this point.

Taking kids out of school for a vacation
Only you know your child. If you feel like they will have a hard time catching up, then I wouldn't. But if they do really well in school, I don't see a problem with it.

Re: Taking kids out of school for a vacation
At that age, I would be hesitant to take them out for more than a day or two. I would also confirm with the district what the testing schedule is.

I would not pull out at those ages.
I don't plan to pull my kids out even in elementary school, maybe kindergarten but that is probably it.

Re: Taking kids out of school for a vacation
I would, but speak with the teacher first. Going on vacation during school breaks are not enjoyable to me at all. Way too crowded. We plan on pulling kids out of school once a year

Re: Taking kids out of school for a vacation
My SD was 11 when we pulled her out of school for 3 days for Disney over the Feb break that was lost to Sandy.
We were so frustrated because the whole point of going during Feb. break was to not miss school. If we had canceled, we would have lost $1000.
We definitely think it didn't help things. However, it really is kid dependent. She is the type who really needs to focus and distractions seem to affect her easily.
I wouldn't say definitely no, but I would consider every other option first. Think about all the recent posts and news items about changes in the education world - there is a lot of pressure on students and every minute in the classroom counts.

Taking kids out of school for a vacation
I think in middle school and even more so with high school that missing a week for vacation can be very detrimental. For younger kids I don't think it such a big deal, but once they hit 7th grade and up, I think its not the greatest idea - but, like others have said, a lot depends on the individual child
