Taking photos of car accidents?
My cousin was on the Belt Parkway yesterday and there was a car flipped over and burned. She said that people were pulling over onto the grass, getting out and TAKING PICTURES of the car -- it took a LONG time to go passed and the cops didn't ask them to leave! Why would you want to take a picture of that??

Would I? No!
But in this day when EVERYONE is looking for their 15 mins, or youtube stardom Im not suprised. Maybe they thought their pics would end up on the news. Maybe they are just sick sh!ts. None the less, Im not surprised.

Re: Taking photos of car accidents?
Believe it or not, it's legal because they are in plain view, public place. Fire departments and ambulance corps routinely take pictures of the outside calls they respond to.
There's a photographer for Newsday who seems to be at every single horrible thing that happens on the island. I can't imagine having that job. James Carbone, I think his name is.
Anyway, in this day and age, I'm sure these people are looking to put them up on MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, whatever. Doesn't surprise me at all. By standers at my scenes used to ask me questions about my patients, how things happened, etc. I was always disgusted by the nosiness of people but now I just accept it.

Maybe taking pictures is legal but they were pulling over on the side of the highway and NOT for an emergency - they could probably cause ANOTHER accident.
I am glad others feel the same way because my cousin was so upset by it. It really shook her - I know if I see something terrible there is that URGE to look but I always shield my eyes in case there is something I don't want to see. I feel like we are so desensitized now - its sad.

True, and that's also illegal. I got in trouble with a cop for pulling over on the side of Wantagh Parkway by the beach to take a picture of a rainbow.

People take pics to either sell to local newspapers or whatnot, or just to be jerks & show them off to their friends.

An EMT on Staten Island got fired for taking pictures and putting them on Facebook (I think FB) of an accident.

I can't imagine you would be allowed to spread it around for personal use. But there are pics of fires and whatnot on department websites.
Then there are websites like Rotten.com (do NOT go there if you don't want to be physically ill, it is not safe for work) where people post the most heinous things.

I'm supposed to have a strong stomach and it made me ill also - I haven't been there in years.

I think the EMT got fired because he showed extremely poor judgment. Imagine if you were a relative of the person who was in the accident. You trust the police/emt/fire to be respectful of your privacy and not to show any pictures of anything that happened. When someone who is in a position to see things that the public might not, and then posts them on a public forum, i think they deserve to be fired for abusing their position (and reprimanded for being an azz)

Like that girl, remember? The one that crashed into the tollbooths and the pictures were posted on the internet for everyone to see. What a horrible thing, especially for her parents.

Exactly. Anyone who is in a position of being a responder to a tragedy should treat it with the respect it deserves.
people stopping to take pics on the side of the road should know better (and feel ashamed of themselves), but most of the time they don't

Re: Taking photos of car accidents?
Agreed. But as long as people keep viewing those pictures on Newsday.com of the car accident gallery, or wherever, people will keep taking them I guess. It's the morbid curiosity gone wild.

Re: Taking photos of car accidents?
Wow.. I can't believe this....... I mean, I can, but I can't!
And then when people show these pictures to others, I'm sure it's used for some form of entertainment .. like .. "man do u see the way that thing is flipped over!!" and "yea dude look at that big hole in the windshield the size of a head!" I am sure these are the types of convos SOME (not all) people have when discussing pics like those.
I understand WHY it's allowed to take pics, but I don't think it should be.
