Taking vacation time directly before disability begins
I was thinking about taking some vacation time before the babies birth (short term disability will begin when the baby is born) but I thought I heard that was not allowed. Is there a website I can read the disability laws in NY, or is this something that varies with place of employment?

I don't know where you can read the laws but I was told the same thing.

Re: Taking vacation time directly before disability begins
I did that - I had 10 days vacation and you don't even fill out the disability form until you have an actual "birth" date. HTH

Re: Taking vacation time directly before disability begins
It depends on the company you work for. At my company, you are not allowed to extend your leave (before or after) by using vacation/personal time.
ETA: if your doctor puts you out of work prior to the birth, you may be eligible for disability. If that is the case, you can receive disability for the time period prior to the birth and then 6-9 weeks after the birth. But again, you must be dsiabled prior to the birth in order to receive disability benefits~

Re: Taking vacation time directly before disability begins
With my first DC I planned on taking a weeks vacation (the week before my due date). then my maternity leave would kick in even if the baby was three weeks late. I don't think the disability $$$ can start until you actually have the baby.
But DS came three weeks early. I never got to take my vacation week.

They said disability can start anytime after 36 weeks but it would only last for 6 weeks. I know I can take vaca. time after that at the same time as FML. I'd rather take vacation before, but like you said you never know when the baby will come.
