Re: talk to me about bethpage...

Bethpage could be either Bethpage SD, Island Trees SD, or even Plainedge SD. I think all 3 school districts are good; Bethpage is the highest ranked according to Newsday rankings. Island Trees is on the Princeton Plan for elementary schools (grouping kids by grade, not neighborhood). Bethpage has pretty reasonable taxes, and Island Trees even more so. Plainedge's taxes are on the higher side.

I've sold homes in Bethpage, and my grandmother lives there (she lives in the Hahn estates area, which is zoned for Island Trees).

I don't think there's much "bad" to say. I have had people express environmental concerns (or just asking the occasional question) about the high tension power lines that run through the area, or ask about soil testing because of Grumman.

But overall, buyers seem to find Bethpage (esp. SD 21/Bethpage schools) to be desirable and convenient.

I grew up there. I don't live on LI now, but many of the kids I grew up with stayed local. Several of our neighbors grew up & bought houses on the same block.

It had a definite small town feel to me --I graduated from HS with kids I went to nursery school with, I went to HS with my parents current dentist, my old girl scout leader is my mom's hair dresser now. Chat Icon

Depending on where you are--the houses can be a bit older--my parents block most house were built in the late 30s, but renovated. Most are dormered capes with no garage, or a detached (built later) garage.

So, they may not have more modern layout people are looking for (open layout, master bathroom, etc) but it's not a bad area.

We live in Bethpage-on the northern end near Plainview border. Infact, my son's school is in Plainview but bethpage district. The schools(esp elementary level) are very good. Lots of families here-as the pp mentioned, lots of people stayed on or came back to where they grew up. Not us, though-we are new to the area. The only con that I can think of is there is no true downtown/village area. The business district is split into two areas and the one near the train station undergoes a lot of flux. You need a car to go around. There are some environmental concerns but but contrary to what you may hear, it is safe to drink the water here! Fm if you want more info.

Good area with good schools. I can't move to Nassau but if I could, it's the only town I would move to. I Love it's small town feel and it's not overcrowded like most places in Nassau tend to be. I really do love the area.

What would you consider the other business area? I grew up near the train station and my parents actually chose it because my mother didn't drive and we could walk to a lot
(before the post office moved.)

It's not a quaint downtown, like Babylon Village (or others i can't think of/haven't been to) but it's practical if you live in that part of Bethpage.

Re: talk to me about bethpage...

i grew up there and went to school there. my parents are still there, my sister moved back and is a teacher in the school district.

I only moved a town over (plainedge SD) so I could be close...since at time we couldnt find a house that fit our needs.

Convenient to RR, parkways, community is great. schools are good.

we called it 'town" but that is the area of a strip of stores, which was local. has it all.

Re: talk to me about bethpage...

I grew up in Bethpage as well. LOVED it! The schools are excellent and I think it gives you a "small" town feel.
When we started looking for a house bethpage was our only choice however at the time we couldn't afford to buy there so we ended up in Hicksville/bethpage border. My next (and hopefully final) home will be in bethpage

It's convenient to all the major roadways, train station, and tons of shopping

Re: talk to me about bethpage...

Bethpage is a great area with good schools but DH and I refuse to buy there because of the toxic plumes and back history surrounding certain sectors of Bethpage (cancer clusters). I'm sure there are studies in progress that attempt to prove there are no carcinogens in the water supply and soil, but I'm just too paranoid to believe them.

Bethpage is a nice town, I grew up nearby and still have friends and family in the area. Spent alot of time at the park, pool and BHS.

Please do some research online, there are environmental concerns that are deeply impacting the area as well as neighborhoods to the south and southeast.
