Talk to me about Credit Unions
Are there benefits to being a member of a credit union that you can't get at other banks?
I have no intent to leave my current banks, but was considering opening an accout with a credit union at which I qualify for membership. Are there any particular benefits to this?

Re: Talk to me about Credit Unions
i opened an account with one just to get a car loan... they had rates that the dealer couldn't come close to beating! my money gets automatically transferred every month, so its nice and smooth. i still hvae most of my money with a regular bank, though

Their rates are very good. Direct deposits are early.

I use multiple banks. Good rates with the credit union.

Re: Talk to me about Credit Unions
Love my CU!
Their rates are always higher for CD's.
We also got our mortgage through them because their rate was significantly lower than any other commercial bank as well as the closing costs. Plus, they haven't sold a mortgage in over 5 years, so I know that my mortgage will remain with my CU instead of being sold.
Customer Service has always been great.

better rates overall, and i believe we also qualify for several benefits as first-time home buyers.

Re: Talk to me about Credit Unions
I bank with various banks and we also have an account with a credit union. We're scattered all over the place. Between banking for DH's companies, where we pay bills, where we have our mortgages for our home and rental properties.
I love banking with a credit union. Almost non-existent fees, very friendly people, great online banking, GREAT rates, free financial advise (I love to pick at their advisors brains before going to one that I have to pay, it's comforting to know he's there and at no cost.) No-fee ATMs, shared branches across the nation. I could go ON and ON. I like my CU for investment purposes to. My kids have kid accounts with them too.
Sorry to ramble on. lol

Re: Talk to me about Credit Unions
Credit Unions are not for profit. They are generally not out to make as much money off of you as a commercial bank. All this means is that the fees are usually much lower, money orders, bank checks, returned checks, etc. Also loan interest rates are lower. Interest paid on general checking, savings, money market, is higher. I would join, I think that there is a benefit, escpecially if you will need a loan in the future.
