Talk to me about Girl Scouts
DD asks to join everyday.
I work a very irregular schedule and DH is in a management position requiring working OT and covering other shifts. I'm worried that it will be very hands on for us as her parents (she is turning 6 in November).
I dont really know much about it, but dont want to sign her up if we wont be able to really commit to it.
I'drather just sign her up for dance again - once a week

Re: Talk to me about Girl Scouts
I don't know about Girl Scouts, but we signed up my son for Cub Scout last year and that only lasted a month. I just couldn't do it. Very time consuming. I work FT and my DH works a FT and PT job. It was always me doing the running around and after sports and Catechism I just couldn't keep up with it. It ended up being ok since he didn't really like it anyway.
For us it didn't work because of work and time. I think it's great for SAHM and SAHD. Makes the running around a lot easier!

Re: Talk to me about Girl Scouts
At most she will have a meeting or outing once a week. Some troops only do 2x a month. You can just drop off, and you need not have any involvement at all if you don't want to. It can be a very rewarding experience for her. She will be a Daisy at this point.

Wow, they let you drop them off? I'm in NC, but the parents HAVE to stay with the kids. Maybe that's just here?
And yes, it is only a couple of meetings a month, but the activities you're suppose to do in between meetings and the fundraisers was just too much for us. We didn't have the time. And it might have been easier if my son actually wanted to do the work.
I signed him up thinking that it was going to be a rewarding experience for him and hoping it was going to be, but it wasn't. We also had a HORRIBLE Den mother. She NEVER showed up and NEVER told us about any of the outings they did so my son missed everything. We also only met her one time. So, other than us not having enough time, we had a horrible experience! IT's suppose to be great for kids. Maybe we'll have to try it again later on.
ETA: And I have to correct that my son was in it from September through December and that's when we pulled him.

My parents both worked FT and never had to do anything for me when I was a GS! I loved it and hope DD wants to join one day!

Re: Talk to me about Girl Scouts
DD is a daisy. The fall will be her second year. You do not need to be involved except to get her to meetings and pick her up. Our troop meets once a week in the evening. If there is a special activity that week, they don't have their regular meeting. DD loves it and it can be a very rewarding experience. For example, DD's troop sang christmas carols at a senior home, helped at a fundraiser for a little girl with a fatal disease, etc. Some moms drop off and come back in an hour and some stay and wait.

Me too! I loved it...even as I got older and it became uncool to be a GS I still went and loved it. I can't wait for dd to be old enough...although I'd like to be involved with it, my parents never were

Re: Talk to me about Girl Scouts
Depends on the troop leader. One person I know is a leader and asks parents to help out, but doesn't get a lot of parent participation and plans the stuff anyway.
My coworker told me recently that her daughter's troop leader requires them to sign up to be at a certain # of meetings and volunteer to run certain activities (cookie mom, trips, etc.) It was communicated that if the parents didn't sign up for these things, the child couldn't participate.

Re: Talk to me about Girl Scouts
Ok, GS sounds better than Cub Scouts. From what I heard Girl Scouts are very different than Boy Scouts. Boy scouts are actually more family friendly and wanting the families/siblings to participate and be involoved constantly. Not so much with the Girl Scouts. At least from what I've been told.
I don't know, I think Cub Scouts was just too demanding for working parents. It was a turn off in a way. Like I said, maybe it was the leader we had?
I also have a question about GS? I was also told from the Cub Scouts that Girl Scouts don't even want many parents going to outings and camping with them? Only a select few can go? Is this true? In Cub Scouts everyone is invited all the time.

Re: Talk to me about Girl Scouts
I'm a Daisy leader. Meetings and parent involvement vary by troop. When you are signing up, talk to your area leader about your schedule, they will be able to fit you into the troop that's best for your family.
Our troop meets every other week. Parents didn't need to be involved more than picking up their dd since we meet right after school in a classroom. We had a few field trips, none of which are mandatory. Girls whose parents couldn't drive were easily able to get a ride with another Daisy and their parent or with one of the 3 troop leaders. We don't do the magazine and munchies sale in the Fall, only the cookies in the spring.
The other Daisy troop in our school has a lot more meetings, trips and does all the product sales. They also require parents to volunteer at 2 meetings per year.
For more info, contact Girl Scouts of Nassau County or Girl Scouts of Suffolk County

It's definitely the leader. I'm a Cub Scout leader. The 5yos HAVE to have a parent with them at all times. At 6yo, however, you can definitely drop them off, as long as there are at least two adults for the group. I've had parents do that, especially when the older son is playing a basketball game in the gym down the hall.
As a working parent myself, I understand people's schedules, and I do as much as I can to work around that. I don't require a set amount of participation, and I work with families who have a difficult time making a lot of the meetings.
Cub Scouts is also much different than Boy Scouts. In Cub Scouts, the rules are "one parent, one tent, one Scout" for overnight activities. In Boy Scouts (age 11-18), the boys are encouraged to be more independent, and parents are encouraged to not join the boys (there are still a minimum number of adults needed, but not one-to-one).
