Talk to me about Grass
We are cleaning the backyard of our new place and want to get the grass in shape. We have "springs" of it here and there, but never having owned a home, I dont know the first thing about getting it going and we would like to do it ourselves.
Any advice and tips on where to start?
We nee dthe REAL basics...totally clueless here..
TIA!

Re: Talk to me about Grass
usually when there is barely any grass & some weeds its a soil compaction problem. We had this in our front yard & we corrected by tiling, adding topsoil, then seeding. We are 100% organic so getting a golf course look is nearly impossible. We have about 70% true grass & 30% weeds, its all green & lush looking & short of adding chemicals there's not much we can do except practice good organic turf care long term to see improvements. My library has a few good books on orgainic lawn care for beginners, try yours.

Re: Talk to me about Grass
It's too hot now to plant grass seed.
While waiting for fall, I would do the following:
1. Purchase a fertilizer for the current grass that is growing, and depending on what you buy, you apply it 1x/month.
2. Purchase a weed killer to spray on the areas that are extremely bad, so grass will grow, but the weeds will go away.
Then, once fall comes, rotate the soil a little with a rake, sprinkle grass seed down and just wait for the spring for it to germinate.

I agree with the above, however you may want to consider adding a layer of topsoil over the entire top of your lawn.
We did this in our front yard, and the grass came out incredible. I wish we had done it in the backyard also!

ITA!
I would personally ask the landlord to take care of it.

he wont, he pays for landscaping of certain areas, we have a huge huge area in the back......we have overgrowth from the park next door in the way way back...
We are on our own and we have no problem paying for grass and making the yard nice for ourselves, just dont know how.
Theres a small area off our deck next to a large brick patio section we want to make nice for the kids and its mostly weeds and dirt right now from lack of care basically that we want to get a nice grass growing on.

You can always put sod down, but you might not want to pay for something like that since it's not your own. GL!

Re: Talk to me about Grass
Donna,
It's too hot right now.
I tried to do a grass patch with a bare sport in our yard last week for EJ's birthday party next week and it's fried. I watered and watered. It did not even germinate.
It's supposed to be cooler next week. In the high 70's. You will need to water 2-3 times per day. That may work.
But at 90+ it's just too hot.

You are supposed to seed in the Spring after the frost. The temp is "cooler". Like 60's low 70's.
