Re: talk to me about Mastic Beach
I'll be very honest - it's not the greatest area and there is a reason why the houses are so cheap. There is a lot of crime and the school systems are not that good.
I've had friends who grew up in Mastic and couldn't wait to get out.

Re: talk to me about Mastic Beach
I would not consider moving there. Ever.
Just drive around a little. The area near Smith Point is ok enough, but I wouldn't even waste my time looking there.

I live in the Shirley area, which isn't that far from where you are talking about.
You are more than welcome to FM me any questions.
Honestly, I really don't like posting things on here about it - cause I ripped into before.
I will say there are good and bad things about the area

Re: talk to me about Mastic Beach
We lived in Mastic Beach when we first moved here from out of state 9 years ago. I had no idea that it was the kind of area that it was! I figured "beach"..it couldn't be too bad. Needless to say, we only lived there for a short period of time (a year). I honestly have not one positive thing to say about the area.

I used to live in Shirely, which is a very nice town, but MB is not. I wouldn't recommend it.

Re: talk to me about Mastic Beach
I think relative to other LI areas it is higher crime. I think there are plenty of nice hard working people that try to clean the area up, but their efforts are constantly overshadowed by the criminals & low-life's that ruin it for everyone. It has the potential to be a gorgeous luxurious waterfront area, hopefully in our lifetime we'll see that happen. I would not go so far as to say "I would NEVER live there"....everyone Has to live somewhere & I've known people that have successfully raised families there.
I think there are other eastern Suffolk areas that may be safer & similar in price.

I agree. It also has been a dumping ground for years for social services, group homes and other things. There are nice areas of Mastic I believe but I think of the areas around it Mastic Beach has a lot more issues going on.

Re: talk to me about Mastic Beach
I want to thank you all for your input via posts and fm's.
My mom went into contract on a house there this weekend. I didn't know enough about how close she was (or where she was looking) until then.
My husband and I spent time looking up the crime and sex offender information....luckily (or unluckily, depending on how you look at it) it is STILL better than what you find in NYC (in terms of rates...even in the nabe we come from) and in the very least, my siblings are not unfamiliar with these situations and are fairly streetwise/savvy.
I hope that Kelly's dream view comes to fruition. the home my mom purchased is in great condition on a nice sized parcel of land. Maybe I will kick the shyt out of someone on the corner, just so they know we mean business
I again want to thank you all for you opinions, and especially thank those that were kind enough to fm me the facts and data of the area. I love the facts Jack.

I agree as well. I grew up in Shirley and moved out after college. My whole family still lives there and I can attest to the fact that there are MANY hard-working middle class families that still live there. That having been said, I *probably* would never move back there. Mostly because of the schools. And that's not a testament at all to the teacher's there but moreso the other students. It's a shame really because I thought it was a wonderful place to grow up and live, especially being so close to the water. I still do enjoy going there for that reason and to see my family. It will always be "home" to me and I am sad that it has such a terrible stigma and that some people look down upon me for saying that I grew up there.

I have to agree, I grew up in Mastic and I still have many friends who live in the area as well as my parents. I personally wouldn't live there because of the issues with the dumping of social services and group homes. My bf is very concerned because of all the registered sex offenders that live in the area. I would look in other areas before settling down in the Mastic Beach area.

Re: talk to me about Mastic Beach
My sis and BIL bought a house in Shirley without knowing anything about the area and aren't too happy. I know Shirley is the neighboring community to Mastic. Not really helpful at all, I know, I know...
