I love walking around the area, the mansions, the beach, there's a glass blowing place, plenty of little shops. I've seen lots of kids at Brick Alley Pub and The Red Parrot.

They have a great fort with a cool tour if in season (meaning open). We just walked around, went to restaurants, the beach area and some local playgrounds (nothing fancy, but new to the kids).
Mystic is close by... if you need kiddie oriented stuff.

Thanks! We’re actually combining it with Mystic.

We went to the fort too that was cool. I didn’t love the trip but I’m glad I went

I've never been but Travel + Leisure just had a whole article on Newport and it made me want to go.

There is a topiary garden the kids might like. Very pretty. At an old house on the outskirts of town. My DS loved the beach - climbing on the flat rocks and collecting colorful granite rocks. He would have stayed there all day.

Re: Talk to me about Newport, RI
there's a road called the cliff walk, goes around the water in front of the mansions. it's long, in some places crumbling and treacherous (wouldn't take kids the whole route), I think some people just do the beginning it's easier.
there's also haunted mansion tours (not sure kids would be appropriate) but just another thing they have. we did one at night and loved it.
