Talk to me about Saf-t-Swim..

DH & I are both good swimmers. We love the water. FIL has a big inground pool at his house. DD LOVED the pool in Florida while we were these last week.
I want to enroll her in Saf-t-swim. DH will most likely be taking her.
Anyone do it? What's it like? Which classes did you sign up for? DH is worried he'll be the only dad there..is this true?
Any info is appreciated!!
TIA!

IMO - I hated the set up of Saf-T-Swim - to me it was ran by kids and I had an issue with that - it wasnt swim lessons to me - Anyway - We chose to goto NY Sports Club in Deer Park Tanger and LOVED IT - it was more $$ but worth it... In both places there were dads in the pool with there kids.....

Re: Talk to me about Saf-t-Swim..

It isnt ran by 'kids'. They are all certified, and they must be over 18 to work there.

My sister actually works there.

My DS went there for swimming lessons and absolutely loved it, it took away his fear of the water.

But it also varies by child. I have a niece who went and it didnt help her fear of the water.

the only thing i didnt like was that if your child is afraid and you want to cancel the lessons, you lose your money.

we love saf-t-swim. My daughter has been going to swimming since 6 months we just switched to saf-t-swim because our other school was just too expensive. Already she has learned soo much and at 3 is swimming across the pool on her own. We go to the new one in Oceanside

My DH did the "mommy and me" with our DD when she was around 10 months old. He wanted to do something with her and I didn't want to be in a bathing suit!
They had a great time.
DD is now 18 months old and doing one on one instruction.

Not necessarily true. You can start teaching swimming at 15, but mainly by 16. But they are trained. Some are certified lifeguards too.

I used to work at Saf-T-Swim and thought their program was ABOVE AND BEYOND any other program I ever taught. As a parent, it is tough to watch and handle the way their program is run.

HOWEVER, their program is designed to teach safety first. Your child will learn to save themselves if they ever fall in the water. Who the heck cares if your child can pretend to show you Michael Phelps swimming arms if they can't even get to the side of the pool on their own? Too many programs are designed to make swimming pretty. Saf-T-Swim is designed to have a child save themselves. Once they can, then they work on perfecting your swimming stroke.

I will not lie, watching the lessons can be a little freaky at first because it looks like your child is being dunked under the water. But, I'd rather my child get over their fear in a controlled setting. God forbid they have their first experience with no adults around and drown.

Please FM me with any questions. I don't know current pricing and stuff like that though.

Re: Talk to me about Saf-t-Swim..

I did the Mommy and me class and while I am sure they are certified, for me, it was a bit of a waste (though my cousin did it with her son and said it was great - but it was a different location.)

We had fun - DS loved being in the water and I loved it too - but there was no real "instruction" going on. It was basically pool time.

From what I saw, it looked like the individual instruction was good.

DH and I switched - mostly I went in the pool with DS, but DH did it a few times too.

I don't know about that programme specifically, but I take my daughter to a swimming class every week, she was 6 months old when she started. We love it, its totally the highlight of our week! We do songs, free play, "swims" (which is where the baby goes underwater) lots of different holds, and its just awesome!

We are training the babies to do certain thigns, so when we say "Ready baby, go" they close their eyes and their mouths! Its amazing! We practice in the bathtub with water on her face every night. All the babies do it. And we also do kicking and holding onto a rail, so that if something happens, the babies can hold on to the rails on their own.

If you have a programme like that I highly recommend it!!

And yay! Tomorrow is swimming day!
