Talk to me about WW

It's free through my employer if I lose weight.

I know people go to meetings and such but not looking to add something that is going to be another commitment.

But you can do it online too, correct?

Yes, WW can be done online.

I personally have always done it as a meetings member, and have used the eTools online as a supplement to meetings -- to assist with counting points, tracking, food ideas.

I like meetings for accountability (having someone else weigh you) and camaraderie (hearing other people's struggles and successes kind of keeps me on track, and having things reinforced at weekly meetings helps keep me motivated, esp. now that I am maintaining). But I know many, many people are successful doing the online program only. Imo, though, the WW site could use some tweaking to make it less cumbersome and complicated, and more user-friendly. They do have good mobile tools, now (good phone apps and that type of thing).

Let me know if you have specific questions. I first did WW in 2005, then in 2009 (after having DS), and then I re-committed again last January. Every time I've restarted the program, I've been able to lose weight steadily and reach my goal, but it's pretty gradual weight loss (usually no more than 1-2 lbs a week, often even a half lb or something). I lost about 33 lbs last January to May, and have been maintaining since June. I've pretty much done it with little to no exercise... not that it's ideal, but I am not someone who is huge into working out, and while WW encourages activity, you can totally lose weight by following the food program alone.

I like WW because you can eat what you want, and you don't need to eat prepackaged food or whatever. It accommodates all types of food preferences and dietary restrictions, and it allows for occasional indulgences (like eating out, alcohol, etc.). For me, it's a very realistic and do-able plan. It does take an investment of time upfront to get used to the "points plus" system, but once you get in a habit of tracking and learn the basics of the program and a lot of the values of foods you eat often, it becomes second nature.

I don't know much about the new "Simple Start" tweak to the plan they are rolling out. My meeting leader is going to address it this week, but I think it might be a slightly more restrictive component of the program that you implement for an initial period of time to "kick off" weight loss.

Good luck!

It does really work if you stick to it. I lost weight when I was on it but unfortunately fell off the wagon and I just recently rejoined it again. I do online only because all I really need is the app to log my points in (and its cheaper). I did do meetings when I first joined last year, but it wasn't for me. Some people need/like the meetings though to hold them accountable to get on the scale each week though. Good luck!

ETA: I don't know much about the new 2 week simple start program either, but I just resumed with tracking since I know that worked for me.

It can be done online but I think the meetings are a HUGE help. WHen I first joined in 2007 I was like no way do I want to do meetings and sit around and thought it would be like an AA meeting.

If you find the right one for you they can be so much fun. I made great friends in the one I used to go to.

Like any other program you get out what you put in. So I find the people who say it didn't work for me was because they were not being truthful to themselves and what they were actually putting in their mouth.

I lost 30lbs in just over 4 months. It was fast and know that that is rare but I fully committed myself and never cheated EVER.

I have since had a baby and still trying to get back to my old self and need to get myself back tp meetings.

Re: Talk to me about WW

Thanks ladies.

There are a couple of women at work who do it so maybe we could be each others motivator.

I need to sit down and talk to them but it's been so crazy lately at work with the holidays.

I agree that the program works but only if you are really doing it. I have always had success but I am also very diligent when in "losing mode" about weighing and measuring food and researching point values. I always found that using my weekly points and splurging now and then wouldn't set me back but I had to be doing the plan to a T 95% of the time for the weight to come off pretty steadily and quickly.

There are people in my meeting who brag that they've been faithfully attending WW meetings for like 20 years, but they don't lose weight. So there's NO WAY they are actually "working the program" in the sense of tracking food, counting points.

I think you need to be a fairly detail-oriented person to be truly successful with WW. I have friends and family members who say they just don't have the mindset to calculate points and keep detailed track of what they eat, and I totally understand that and agree that then WW wouldn't be the way to go.

Re: Talk to me about WW

Thanks again ladies.

I know the problem is exactly what I put into my mouth and I need to be honest about it.

A couple of people have told me that with WW, you can eat little tastes of "bad stuff" but you are primarily filling up on good, healthy, real food like fruits, veggies and nothing processed.

I notice my friend at work often will have a big salad or homemade soup for lunch.

Once I cut out the bad stuff I am fine.

I definitely feel there's something addictive in the bad stuff though.
