Target return policy changing 4/1/07 - Very long

I saw this on another board and wanted to share since I thought it was crappy. The OP on the other board works at the return counter at Target.

Normal Merchandise:
* With a receipt - You are still golden! As long as it was dated within 90 days and has not expired (in which, like before, the receipt is useless), you're fine
* Without a receipt (but can be looked up via credit card, debit card, or check) - As long as it was purchased in the last 90 days and you have the correct card/check with you, you're also fine.
* Without a receipt - You have 2 no receipt ITEMS per year, still starting from the first transaction you use.
Without a receipt - The ITEM you use for a no receipt exchange can not exceed $40!  And you may only return 2 no receipt ITEMS. FOR INSTANCE!!! IF YOU BUY 6 HAND TOWELS, AND DECIDE AGAINST THEM OR WHATEVER, YOU MAY ONLY RETURN 2 OF THEM AND THAT COUNTS AS YOUR 2 FOR THE YEAR!! Doesn't matter that you could fit all 6 on one transaction without exceeding the new $40 limit, it now turns into items instead of transactions.  You can return 2 ITEMS a year without a receipt.
* Store credit may be given if item totals less than $10.
* Without a receipt - Exchanges can only be made for the lowest sale price the item has been in the last 90 days.  So if that cute outfit was on sale last week for $3.50, and you paid $15.00, sorry, you can only exchange for $3.50.

AND BEWARE BECAUSE AS OF AUGUST 1, 2007:

* The limit for no receipt items (still limit of 2 ITEMS per year) drops from $40 each to $20 each!!!)
* GIFT PURCHASE LOGS MAY NO LONGER BE USED AS GIFT RECEIPTS!!! NO GIFT RECEIPT (Doesn't matter if you weren't even GIVEN a gift receipt for it) YOU MUST FOLLOW THE NEW NO RECEIPT PROTOCOL!!

So basically - if you get duplicate strollers from target, you're stuck with them both starting August 1. If you didn't register for them or they didn't take them off your registry, you're stuck with them both starting April 1.

If you get 5 pair of shoes, and only like 1 pair, and you paid cash and lost your receipt, you're stuck with at least 2 pair (unless each pair are more than $40/$20- 8/1/07-in which you're stuck with all 5)

The bottom line is: If you have ANYTHING YOU NEED TO RETURN WITHOUT RECEIPTS - DO IT BEFORE THIS SUNDAY!!!!! I want to give you ALL a chance to return without receipts while the policy is still decent before it turns ugly! And urge EVERYONE YOU KNOW to GIVE GIFT RECEIPTS WITH THEIR GIFTS!!! And keep EVERY RECEIPT! Even if you have to make a special pocket in your wallet for just target receipts, don't throw ANY OF THEM OUT!!! Put them RIGHT IN YOUR WALLET for safekeeping!

And please PLEASE whatever you do, don't give the service desk person a hard time. We don't make the rules, we're just given them and have to enforce them. When we got these new rules yesterday, all of us were groaning and complaining too. We're the ones, after all, who have to get verbally harrassed for it, so pleaseeeeeeee understand that it's not MY fault lol!! And before you ask, there's no way for even a manager to override the new rules, it's computer enforced so we have no way around it manually.

Wow! That is harsh! I didn't even think you could return anything without a receipt at this point unless it could be looked up in the computer by the credit card. In fact, I was there one day trying to EXCHANGE for a different size a little Christmas onesie I bought and since I didn't have the recepit, no dice. Even though I wanted the same thing, just in a bigger size, they wouldn't let me. Chat Icon

Why shop there if they don't even "help" the consumer?? I have to spend over $2,000 there a year - and they won't thake back my $20? Shame on Target!!

There return policy is horrible even now! I got so much stuff from there without gift receipts and wasn't able to return it because I exceeded my 2 returns per year. Chat Icon

Thanks for posting this! That is the worst return policy ever! It will deter people from registering there for sure!

I have one that beats that..."Toysrus" you cant return ANYTHING without a receipt. You are stuck with it!
If I was the surrounding stores and saw this nonsense I would publicly announce "we accept all returns" it would make people shop there. This is getting to be ridiculous IMO.

Its horrible....unfortunately I have dealt with this problem of no receipt and apparently exceeded my 2 times that I was denied a return!

Yup..they use your license and know how many times you have come in without a receipt.

Dont get me wrong this does stink..but overall its not really their fault..

Its b/c people steal soooooo much stuff and then return it...

Example...Steal camera from Target..return later for store credit of $200...sell $200 gift card for $100 to buy drugs...

Their are articles all over the internet regarding why stores are being forced to change their return policies..Not to mention all the scams people pull WITH the receipt...

It does really stink that we THE HONEST FOLK get burned...UGH

I agree with you on WHY they are doing it BUT to me that is on them. If they cant install the proper equipment and staff correctly for people not to steal, the general population should not be held accountable for it.

Re: Target return policy changing 4/1/07 - Very long

It totally sucks.and I only had two items to return. We got them as a gift for DD, didnt like them and say the value was $30 they wouldnt let me return them for say $30 worth of merchandise they had to be returned for the same time of product, i.e for socks I had to get socks, for a two piece outfit I had to get another two piece outfit....totally sucked as I didnt like any of their two piece outfits to ended up getting something that will go in the charity bin.

thank goodness it was only a couple of things.

Re: Target return policy changing 4/1/07 - Very long

It does stink but I think the 90-day policy with a receipt is true for many stores. I was in BRU the other day returning items with a receipt and it was over 3 mos old and they gave me the lowest price as a credit....

I also think in the past people used to return items bought elsewhere and stealing also creates problems for these stores.

That is why I didnt register for DD at Target, their return policy sucks!

Someone gave me a newborn outfit without a receipt, but the outfit was a summer outfit, so they made such a big deal about just exchanging the item for a larger size!

Re: Target return policy changing 4/1/07 - Very long

Target has had this policy posted and on their receipts for at least a couple of years now. No receipt, basically you are SOL. Some stores have as a courtesy to the customers, allowed an even exchange from the same department. They give a gift receipt with every single transaction, so it really shouldn't be an issue.

Most stores are not allowing returns/exchanges without receipts. Toys R Us, Kmart, Walmart and Target all come to mind.

Re: Target return policy changing 4/1/07 - Very long

Ok, maybe I'm the odd girl out here, but, as far as I'm concerned, I hang onto all receipts, and make sure not to throw them away until at least 6 months later. Maybe I'm anal and maybe I am a stickler about things like this, but I just kind of always expect that if I lose my receipt, too bad for me.Chat Icon So, this doesn't seem all that harsh to me.

ETA: to the OP, thank you for giving the heads up, though!

I think the issue is more what if you get duplicate presents from Target (i.e. 1st birthday party) and want to return them? I think in the past they would accept the item back with no receipt (I could be wrong about that part).
