Target's Return Policy

I have to say might be one of the dumbest ones out there yet!

You can only return two things without a receipt --- and when you do -- you have to go to that exact department and get only ONE item for the same amount of money or more.

WHYYY don't they just give you a store credit? I don't understand the rationale behind this?! I think it is so ridiculous!!!!

I HATE their return policy....that is why I dont recommend anyone registering there.
My friend has such a hard time just to exchange sizes.

Re: Target's Return Policy

You would think that for such a huge store their policy would be so much better.

Re: Target's Return Policy

OMG - I just went through this on Sat. I was so mad. I didn't have a receipt and rather than a store credit they said I have to spend the same amount in the same department - which for me is stationary. So annoying, isn't it all the same store - I got mad at the woman even though its not her policy, its Targets. What a dumb policy!

Re: Target's Return Policy

I actually had a problem recently WITH a receipt. I returned 2 articles of clothing that I purchased at another store and they kept telling me that they weren't on the receipt. I know they were on there, because I bought 4 things, all for the same price at the same time and I was returning 2. The manager didn't want to return them using a manual override, because I would have trouble if I tried to return one of the other 2 items.

After I assured her I had no intention of returning anything else, she finally did the return. It was so frustrating.

Re: Target's Return Policy

Is it from a registry or regular purchase?

ETA: for regular purchases, I buy everything on my credit cards. I never had a problem returning items. And I return A LOT

Re: Target's Return Policy

It is one of the worst return policies I have ever seen!
We got so many baby outfits as gifts and they were the wrong size for the season and most didnt have receipts. I was very annoyed, especially after I had to give them my license.
I made everyone in my family go with me to exchange things, otherwise, we would have had a ton of summer outfits that wouldnt fit until the winter

I only run into the problem when I get a gift without a gift receipt from there. Like my MIL likes to buy the kids clothes she finds on clearance, which is great, but sometimes we already have it or something similar or it's the wrong size and I'd like to be able to exchange it for diapers or wipes instead. Seems silly that you can't use it in other departments in the store.

Re: Target's Return Policy

I was so ticked...my son got 2 of the same toys for his birthday. So I figured that I would return one of the toys and get him so much needed shoes. They wouldn't let me, because they were from 2 different departments. I was so ticked.

Re: Target's Return Policy

I had the same problem years ago with KMart . I still remember--I was returning a curtain rod and was told to get something from the same department. I figured that a bathmat was also "housewares." Well, those are 2 different departments.

I may not register at Target b/c of things I heard.

Re: Target's Return Policy

Make sure you go to target.com and write to them and let them know your displeasure, it is the only way they will get the hint to change.

can't they look up the receipt via the credit card? this is what i have done in the past and then they credit the card. if paid by cash and no receipt, then store credit only.

That's been my experience too - no "same amt in the same dept" business.

Although - skew - we probably hit the same target - maybe we're lucky!

Re: Target's Return Policy

Everything I buy at target I pay with my CC. When I return items and don't have my receipts, they just look it up through my CC. I have been doing this for over a year now. I live in CT and I go to 3 stores and never had problems.
