Tax filing question
Even though we got married in Oct 05, do we have to file jointly, or can we file as single? We have no kids. TIA.

Re: Tax filing question
Our accountant told us to file married jointly (we got married in june) as that will get us the most $$ back.

That's what I thought, but we are getting half the amount of money we usually get.

Re: Tax filing question
I am an accountant and your accountant should be able to enter all of the information in the tax return program and specifiy which income items came from either your or your spouse. Then, the program can calculate it both ways (filing married seperately or joint). I would imagine you'd benefit more from filing joint but you never know until all of the info is actually layed out.

Our accountant did this for us. He entered all the info for filing joint and seperately and then we went with the one that gave us more money.

Re: Tax filing question
We are getting back less this year too. I thought we had a choice to file single or married, but the other girls are right. If you are married, you can either file married but filing seperately or married and filing jointly.
Both ways, worked out to be less money than if we were single.

Re: Tax filing question
I think we are filing seperate since we got married at the end of the year. I need to speak to the accountant when we go but over the phone he said that looks like our best deal.

Re: Tax filing question
Although I'm sure many people do it, it's illegal to file as single if you're married. I don't know what the penalties are if people actually get caught, but I'd just file either as married joint or married separate.
If you're a two income household, you most likely fall victim to the marriage penalty (owe more taxes/get less back than you would if you both filed as single). This is b/c the federal tax schedule treats your income as the only income in the household. Once you add your spouse's income, that usually puts your household income in a higher bracket (and subject to a higher tax rate).
