My accountant said that for most cases out there, it's better for couples to file "jointly"/"married".

Can you call your accountant and see if he/she can run the numbers both ways?

I always claimed single/0 - and when I got married changed it to married/0.

DH never changed his from single/1....so we had the numbers run last week. Accountant told me to change mine back to single/0, but we'll still file jointly.

Re: Tax Question - Married Ladies

We both claim single, 0 but will be filing as married. We haven't done our taxes yet this year though. We're still waiting for DH's W2s. Also, this is our first year married, so I hope we're doing it right!

This number/designation basically determines how much $ they take out of your paycheck for taxes each week. For a -0- they take out more and the $ taken out decreases as the number gets higher. You can still file married jointly or married separately if you have a single designation on your W2.

I'm not 100% sure of this but, I'm thinking they'd take out more if you used the married designation as opposed to the single designation because of the marriage penalty, which is going away in 2007 Chat Icon

Re: Tax Question - Married Ladies

we claim married filing jointly. We look at it each year and figure out what works best. this has worked for us.

We each claim 2 dependents on our w4 form though giving us more money in our paycheck. We still end up getting back at the end of the year.

Re: Tax Question - Married Ladies

We file as Married, filing separately.

For the last two years it worked out to be more beneficial for us that way.

single and file jointly until the wedding...

even though we are married, not everyone knows that and until the wedding day comes we will file that way... then we'll go about doing all the stuff associated with changing everything and joining everything.

Re: Tax Question - Married Ladies

I claimed single "0" and we file as married. My husband claimed married "1", and they didn't take enough taxes out, so now we owe money, so he is also going to change to single "0" so they take the most out, and you get money back at the end of the year.

Is that why you didn't get anything back last year?

All my adult life I have been claiming Married 2!!! I just like a bigger paycheck!!! There are so many tricks you can go around and not end up paying at the end either....

Great site that explains it very simply...
