Tax Question...

Should your commute factor into your taxes?... Especially if you take mass transit like LIRR?

Oh well... I figured since I spend so f'n much each month that it would count for something.

Your employer may have a qualified transportation expense program that allows you to deduct a portion of the cost of the LIRR.

I think the maximum monthly "transportation" allowance by law is $115. Still not enough for a monthly ticket (nevermind the additional cost of the subway). Chat Icon

This is an employer benefit though, so your employer has to participate.

I do know you can't deduct your transportation to go to and from your job on your taxes.
