If you are married, do you claim married or single on your w-4?

now that i'm thinking about this....what does withholding as "married but at a higher single rate" really mean? i know it was recommended to me, but I don't know the gist.

Re: Tax withholdings

I am "Married claiming 1" because when I had Bella, DH was working in Real Estate and then took 2 months before going back as a carpenter, so I needed the money!

I may go back to Married 0 if I take the job I have been obsessing over...

Re: Tax withholdings

currently I am claiming single zero, I make more money than DH. I am thinking of changing to married o, just until the end of the year. I want the extra money to pay down some of my CC bills before the baby comes. I do not think it will affect my tax return THAT MUCH......I hope this isn't a bad idea.....I could really use the extra money now, I do not even care if I get zero back at year end

I did this and I got almost 80 bucks a week extra in my paycheck and a lot less at the end of the year in tax returns...for me, I like the chunk better because I put it straight to paying off a chunk of bills...but at the time, I needed the extra money weekly.

Single "0" bc you just never know...I'd rather get back than have to pay back.
