Teacher certification question
I worked in a catholic school for 6 years...right out of college. I took my LAST, ATS-W and the CST for elementary ed. I've always had my provisional certificate but never did the video to get my permanent. Now I'm home and not working (i'm a SAHM for those who don't know) but when I go back to work...what do I have to do to get my permanent certification? I got my certification in 99 and back then it was good for 5 years. That obviously is over and I'm totally out of the loop with what I'm supposted to do. I know that I will not get a job without permanent certification...

Re: Teacher certification question
I think you first have to apply for an extention and then obtain a job for 2 years and do your ATS-P then!

Re: Teacher certification question
I would contact the state.
Right now my friend is going through something similar, and its' a big ol' mess. She did not apply for an extension and now has to take additional tests and even college classes.
I *doubt* that will be the case for you, but I do know that since the time period has lapsed, it may be tricky. I would call them. Good luck!
Oh, and I haven't lived in NY for a couple of years, so I could totally be talking out my azz.

Re: Teacher certification question
In order to get permanent cert. you have to work in a school for 2 years and have your Masters.....at least that is what it was a few years ago, not sure of the new regulations. That is NOT true...many people DO NOT have perm. cert. and have jobs

I have my masters in reading and taught at a catholic school for 6 years. I took all the tests but the video...
Will public schools hire you if you don't have your perm. cert?

I honestly think they would-I don't see that as a problem, honestly. I would try to see if you can get an extension for your perm. cert.

Re: Teacher certification question
I would definitely agree to contact the state. Because your five years passed and you did not get an extention, you may be told you need to go the *new* route, with the new certification rules. Schools may hire you w/o Permanant Cert. if they know your are on your way (though if your Prov. expired and there is no extention on file, you may have a problem) FM if you want, just like other teachers Ive dealt w plenty of NYS *stuff*

Re: Teacher certification question
Call Boces depending on where you live. Talk to their Certification dept. You'l get answers a lot quicker from them then you will from the state. If you call the state you'll be on hold for aqt least 15 minutes before you even talk to anyone to just get you o the right dept. Boces knows their stuff. They even send you the paper work you'll need.

Re: Teacher certification question
you can check out the www.teachNY.com website. They have info there on certification. I'm pretty sure you can still work w/o permamnet certification if you have your MA and can change it to permanent while you work.

they'll hire you with a provisional. BUT, you def should call the state, you *may* have to take additional requirements if you have not filed for an extension to obtain your permanent cetificate.
