Teacher issue-wwyd?
In 3+ years I've never had a complaint about my daughter's teachers. Today she came home and told me that she got confused playing kickball and messed up for her team. In the past she has told me she does not like gym and finds the teacher intimidating. She's also not at all athletic.
So at the end of the class the teacher had them all sitting down, and in front of everyone he told her she ruined the game for everyone. I have never met this teacher or been contacted about any poor behavior or lack of following directions so I was surprised that it went to this level.
She is a sensitive kid anyway and was almost crying. One of the kids in her class told her classroom teacher who talked to her. Many of the kids were very kind to her and told her not to feel bad. But I am really pissed at this teacher and am not sure what to do. I know my dd does not want to make waves but she has hinted that this teacher has been less than kind, but not to this extent. She is in 3rd grade.
So wwyd? I am going to email her teacher to say thank you for talking to her but am not sure what else to do.

I would be making a phone call to that teacher. I would want to know what DD did that prompted that sort of action towards your daughter. I would hear the teacher out then let her/him know how upset your DD is and give your frank opinion of the teachers action based on what you are told. If I did not get a call back from the teacher I would email the request for a conversation and copy the school principal. The teacher may have had a bad day, but you can't take it out on a 3rd grader.

Unacceptable. Im just thinking of how your dd must have felt and Im literally in tears. My first initial reaction would be to speak to the prinicipal. But I know your dd would be nervous that he will be even more rude towards her if he knows that he was spoken to cause of her. Its a tough situation. Im sorry this happened and I really empathise with your dd cause like her i was really sensitive, shy and not athletic as a kid.

Oh no, no, NO! This is just horrendous! How dare this teacher degrade her and make her feel unworthy! I have a HUGE problem with this! I'd be at that Teacher's door demanding a response and even then I'd file a complaint with administration! What a POS!
Ps. I'm a Teacher and a Parent

Teacher issue-wwyd?
I would immediately contact the teacher and principal. No teacher should ever be talking to any child regardless of age like that. I was horribly bullied by my gym teacher growing up and I will never forget the day my mother marched up to school and told him off in front of the whole class. He would call me thunder thighs instead of my name amongst other things.

Re: Teacher issue-wwyd?
unacceptable!! I'd call the principal first. I can't believe she did that. It's a gym class game for crying out loud. I'd be so angry.

Re: Teacher issue-wwyd?
That's terrible! I'd talk first with the classroom teacher and go from there, to maybe go and talk to the gym teacher and/or the principal. Sorry for your DD!

Re: Teacher issue-wwyd?
Yrs definitely talk to the teacher. That is unacceptable. I still remember some negative things teachers said to me back in elementary school. It really does stick with young kids and teachers should know better!

Re: Teacher issue-wwyd?
He basically publically shamed her. Poor kid I have a super sensitive 8yr old and your post made me want to cry knowing how he would have reacted. I would start with talking to the teacher but I think I'd be going to the principal too. So not OK!

Re: Teacher issue-wwyd?
Thanks everyone. I appreciate the support and kind words. We didn't have a great morning- she did not want to go to school. The math test is tomorrow so I don't think she will have gym because it seems to be running into their specials.
I emailed her classroom teacher to thank her for comforting DD. Later today I am going to email the principal when I sort out my thoughts a little more.

Re: Teacher issue-wwyd?
TOTALLY and completely unacceptable.
Honestly, I'd expect that from another CHILD in her class, and I think it's AMAZING that the kids were so kind to her instead of jumping on the teacher's bandwagon.
However, not to add fuel to the fire, but ..... to ME, it seems like the other kids recognized how sh*tty the teacher was also, and were being kind to your daughter to show her it was OK. I'd think the teacher must have been pretty bad for the other kids to react that way, AND for another child to bring it up to your daughter's classroom teacher KIWM?
Do not for a second feel bad about making a call

Re: Teacher issue-wwyd?
Email the gym teacher and give your side of the story and ask for his. I had to email my DD's gym teacher when she was in 2nd grade for a public shaming situation. He was extremely apologetic - he apologized profusely to my DD and to me. I think he has been doing it for a long time, maybe was having a bad day and didn't fully think that his actions that day would cause so much upset and embarrassment to a 7 year old.
Since then we have had no problem with this teacher and I honestly think that as adults we all sometimes need to be called out and for those that teach then its no harm to remind them that their actions can have long lasting consequences for the child.
Good luck

Honestly, I would call the teacher and get his/her side of the story. Sometimes kids' perceptions are not accurate....not saying it didn't happen but I think you should talk to the teacher about it before you take it further.

Chain of command, call the teacher first. Get their side of the story. If you are not happy, then contact the principal.

I agree. It's pretty strange to think a teacher would say that to a kid. Sorry your kid feels that way!

Re: Teacher issue-wwyd?
I heard from her teacher yesterday who spoke with a couple 'reliable' students about what happened. They said there was a lot of confusion during the game, and that the teacher was yelling and angry. Because my DD was the last one to take a turn, she must have felt singled out though apparently he was addressing the class.
So for now I am not going to take it further, but I'm still pissed and plan to monitor the situation. It's maybe unfair to speculate because I wasn't there but I was talking to my neighbor at the bus whose son is in my DD's class and he said the gym teacher yells at them a lot. I get that the gym teachers have to manage large groups (there are 2 classes in there at once) but it's also just a kickball game.

Re: Teacher issue-wwyd?
To play devils advocate- the gym is typically the loudest room in the building with acoustics and noisy shoes, etc. gym teachers are always yelling just to be heard, not always yelling at the kids, which is hard for little ones to understand sometimes.

Re: Teacher issue-wwyd?
I would not let this go. I would ask the principal to make the gym teacher give your dd an apology in front of the class. He should not be shaming her. He should not be yelling at her. Frankly, it sounds like he can't do his job effecively.

Hi.. Im that crazy mom.
Nice to meet you..

If I so much as see a tear streak on my child again I'll expect YOU to run laps at a number she sets, got it punk?
Oh hell to the no f'ing way in this universe!

I WISH I was that brave! As it turned out, she felt she was singled out though it seems like she wasn't- but I am definitely monitoring things.
