Teacher moms with school age children... a ? BUMP

DD1 is going to a PK program. The hours are 9-2. I found a lovely woman that I will drop her off to at 7:30, who will bring her to school and pick her up- and I will pick her up around 3:30-4.

She came at the recommendation of another girl whose daughter was in her care since infancy. I asked her (the babysitter) how much she gets and she said $60 a day. At the moment that is how much we pay for daycare (and since DD1 will be in school most of the day) I asked if we could do $50.... which I think maybe now is a little much but I am going to just leave it.

Now, I am a teacher, so naturally there will be many days that I will be home. For daycare, we had to pay as its part of the "tuition". I realize that I should have asked all of this up front, but do you think I should be paying her for days that she doesn't go?

I want to be fair of course, but with her tuition + DD2 going to daycare, it's expensive.

Thanks in advance!

ETA (2 months later)

It didn't work out. It was too much to drop 2 kids off to different places. In addition....

I have to ask, as a mom (or) would you have been comfortable if....

1- You came to pick up your child and the babysitter was inside doing HW with their child while yours was outside unsupervised? To make matters worse, she was on a trampoline? (my daughter is 3, almost 4)

2- When you came to drop your child off, you found the other child (that was being "watched") alone in the house watching TV while the sitter walked her own kids to bus stop?

3- You found out that the sitter lied to you. Example. I asked her how much she got a day, and she said $60. Turns out she was only getting $40!

I already told her it wasn't going to work, but the more I think about it, I am not even sure if I want to give her 2 more weeks.

As an agreement with our sitter, we do not pay when they do not work. I think this is pretty much the norm, at least from what I have heard.

ETA: I do feel like $50 is a little high. For 3.5 hours thats about $14 an hour.

I had a sitter for three years, we didn't pay her when I didn't work but we arranged that in advance. I paid $80 a day for 7-4 care. I think $50/day is a lot.

I babysat all through college and graduate school. I never got paid when I didn't work. And I agree, $50 is a lot for the little amount of time she will actually be with your daughter.

While $50 is a lot, it's the fact that she is transporting your child. I have a ton of people that can watch DS, but finding someone that is able to drive him to and from school is harder, because they may have other kids they are watching.
I would not pay on days she doesn't watch your DD.

Those are all red flags and I do not blame you for terminating her.

Awful! Pull her out .. Not sure what you mean by 2 weeks. I've changed day care before , starting the new one immediately and paid the prior two weeks pay but my kids was not still there.

I always feel better to avoid confrontation but I'm not sure that's best..to just pay and leave but you could probably tell those 3 facts and not pay the 2 weeks, some times it's easier

Good luck, that's a lot of money for just pick up drop off

Awful. I would not give two weeks under these circumstances. I would pull your dc immediately.

Based on what you wrote about her leaving young children in her care unsupervised, I would definitely not give her two more weeks with your child. Absolutely not.
