Teachers - running into students? a-w-k-w-a-r-d
Rich and I were at the mall last night and my goodness, I think we saw his whole class AND their parents! (He has 4th grade right now).
Of course, the kids stopped him and he said hello, had a conversation with the parents, etc. Some of these parents thought they could have a parent-teacher conference in the middle of the mall parking lot! And of course, I get, "ooooooo - is this your bride?! nice to meet you! what's your name? what do you do? do you live around here? [insert 20 random personal questions here]" Excuse me, but I don't feel that his students' parents need to know where I live!
Rich just stood there and kept talking - he later told me that he didn't want to be rude and just take off on the parents, but come ON! That's Rich though - he doesn't like to piss anyone off.
I actually told a parent (as nicely as possible) that we were just on our way to meet some friends for dinner so we were going to get moving - besides the fact that I looked like butt in my ripped jeans and crazy hair - we were late meeting our friends!
We live 20 minutes from where he teaches, but we keep running into his students! This was the 3rd time since 12/22. How awkward...

that's exactly why I avoid a certain mall !! I would rather drive out of my way, then run into parents!!

Me too.
I'm not happy about my commute and would like to teach much closer to home but there are advantages living in Western, Northern Suffolk and teaching in Southern Eastern Nassau, especially since I teach high school. My MIL taught in her home district, she still subs and runs into kids all of the time.
It's not just the kids, PARENTS don't know the proper boundaries today. When they ask me about grades (off-duty), etc. I usually make a joke saying... "Well, if I had a memory like that for numbers, I'd be playing the tables in Vegas "
Or I'll hear days later... "My mom saw you driving around such-and-such neighborhood last week". Ummm... ok,
Being a teacher is like being a mini-celebrity... well, the hours are longer, the clothes and food not as good and the salary... well, yeah.

I know my husband just finished his student teaching and we live in the same school district and we see kids all the time and they keep asking are you coming back to school next week. They are cute though!! The best is he saw one kid that lives in the neighborhood and said to him I saw some girl driving your car!! LOL

I've run into students a few times, but luckily it's just been wave and run episodes. I had the opportunity to live less than a mile from school but I took the job that was slightly further away - I just couldn't take running into kids at the supermarket all the time.

Re: Teachers - running into students? a-w-k-w-a-r-d
DH and I ALWAYS run in to our students since we both live so close to the districts in which we work. It happens so often it doesn't really bother me anymore, and we have been fortunate that parents respect our privacy and don't bother us with questions about grades and progress. One time I was drinking at DH's bar and saw a few parents - THAT was awkward!

This is why I teach 45 minutes from where I live and avoid doing anything in that area after school hours. I cannot imagine living in my home district, going into the store to buy personal hygenie products or anything of the sort and having one of my students ring me up. I like my privacy.

I work about 10 minutes away and I see my kids fairly often. I don't mind so much bc they are young, but this summer I was out celebrating my 30th bday and I saw one of my kids parents out at a bar- I think it was more awkward for them bc the dad was the live entertainment at the bar that night! It can get annoying though - I feel like I always have to have my professional hat on.

That happened to me on Christmas Eve, I ran into CVS last minute cards and I saw a student of mine from last year and her mom. At least it was a card and not a preganacy test they saw me with

I am not a teacher, but my mother is. Growing up, we lived in the next town over from where she taught. She taught high school, so our waiters were always her students! LOL
It never really bothered us. My sister even worked with a bunch of my mom's students and became very friendly with them.
