Teachers - summer work?
Do any of you work during the summer? I might have to consider this. I was hoping to do a summer camp that a friend recommended, but I couldn't be there for 2 weeks so I can't even apply. And besides, the camp would be ALL friggin summer. I might get 2 weeks vacation. That would suuuck hardcore.
So ladies, what are your plans or what have you done in the past? I know, this is kinda premature. I'm always months ahead of myself anyway.
I don't think I can do summer school in my district either...might conflict with the 2 week course I have to take. Ugggh...I'd much rather have the summer off! Any suggestions for part-time jobs? Personally I'd love a job at a gym but again, the two weeks off might be a problem...
TIA!

Re: Teachers - summer work?
Up until last year I used to work at a school districts "summer playground" It was pretty much like a camp. Girls groups, boys groups sport activities, etc. It was from 9am til noon. Three hours was not too terrible. It paid something like $65 for the 3 hours. There are many school districts that have similar summer programs.

Re: Teachers - summer work?
I have worked summer school for quite a few summers. For us it helps us to have some extra money and I feel like until I have kids I am going to work in the summer.
ETA: I also tutor over the summer.

Re: Teachers - summer work?
I worked all last summer and hope to do it again.
I taught summer school and then I worked at Hunington Learning Center.
NO rest for the weary, lol!!
It is good money (summer school) and doesn't require as much work/grading as regulary school.
I also will work evey summer until we have children and probably part time even when we do have kids.

Re: Teachers - summer work?
i am done with summer camps! Some districts offer enrichment classes to students over the summer- you can sign up to teach a class- they usually only last a week or two...

Re: Teachers - summer work?
I work in Elem, and our district has a 16 day academic summer school. Its over by the end of July, so you still have all of August to relax.

I tutor during the summer. The pay is way more than my district's summer school. I will also teach a class this summer.

Re: Teachers - summer work?
I work at a private camp that is part camp and part school. The downside is that when all is said and done, I have only one and a half weeks of freedom since it ends in late august. I too will work until I have kids.

Re: Teachers - summer work?
I worked at a week long camp this summer. It was called Camp Invention (they have them all over). I made $500 for the week (9-3 every day).
I was hoping to do summer school this summer. But because of budget cuts, it looks like there won't be any.

Re: Teachers - summer work?
I always used to temp in an office (however, this was my job b4 teaching..I was an admin)...to me I needed the break from the kids & it was nice to be back in an office setting (w/ AC!) & it was easy work at good money ($22 an hour).
Thankfully whenever I temped, they found me a long term position where I was at the entire summer (Nikon (Melville), and then 3x at Bear Stearns--NYC).
Pays to look into it. Then too I told them I was only available to the beginning of Aug & I took the last 3 wks off.

Re: Teachers - summer work?
i refuse to teach at a camp or summer school. the pay is just not worth it.
i tutor a few kids a week. it brings in SO much more money than summer school or camp and is easy and fun. this summer i will be busy with my newborn so i won't be doing anything

Re: Teachers - summer work?
I'd rather take summer courses to earn credits which would up my pay the following year... I dont do much in the summer months and I get a big lump sum check the last day of school which helps me get through July/Aug. so I dont really need the money for those weeks

If I don't have to work I don't want to. I want to spend the time with my children.
