TEACHERS! TOPIC : SEATING ARRANGEMENTS!

So what works for you? What doesnt?
Why? Why not ?

Ive seen the horseshoe, "tables" of 4, rows, and every seating arrangement out there... I still cant say Im sure which would work best for me...

Are there any that you would say are GREAT or terrible? and why.

I liked the horseshoe, but got tired of it fast (when I was student teaching).
I think my favorite is the "tables"...

Also, what are your strategies as to who so sit where... This is something Id love a teacher's feedback on!

Thanks! Chat Icon

I am definitely a tables person! Rows remind me of jail. It's not for me.

I always start the year off in tables of 4 and 5. I usually put two weak students with two stronger students. I also put any behavior problems right in front near me and usually try to put them at a very cooperative table-As the year goes on I move seats and arrangements :)

i have 4 tables. I color them, then have bins for math and writing folders with their colors and they sit on lines in those colors, too. I have about 6-8 at each table.

I have tables of 6 - it works but definitely fosters conversation. I put the kids who have trouble focusing and the ones who are really low at the table right in front of where I teach so I can help them and help keep them on task.

I have my kids sitting 4 across, two big rows. It looks like this (you're going to think I am nuts, but I can't describe it)

**** ****
**** ****
**** ****
**** ****

It's really the only way to comfortably fit 32 kids in the room. Also, I do a lot of work on laptops, so when I stand at the back of the room, I can make sure that they are looking where they are supposed to, and not on My Space! With groups (which is how my other class is set up, but that wasn't my choice) it's harder for me to monitor what they are doing online.

I do the same thing and it works out great. I usually change their seats every marking period, so its just about time to change again....
