Where did you go for either your grauate or post graduate classes? I am looking to go back for a second masters--im not sure in what---maybe special ed, math, or speech. I would like to go somewhere that is cheap. Also, online classes would be great but not necessary.

I do not have a job as of right now, so I figure why not spend this time taking classes. Also, do all school districts accept graduate classes from any college? Thanks!!!

Re: Teachers

I got my Masters from Dowling College.

I believe that most districts accept grad credits from almost anywhere. The only restriction I have seen is that some district require that grad classes are taken through a NY-affiliated college.

According to the director of the NYCTD, this is becoming a bigger and bigger issue in districts and is a very popular tool during contract negotiations. NYCTD is losing business rapidly, because their grad credits are affiliated with Chapman University, which is not based in NY. NYCTD has cheap grad classes, but depending on where you are eventually hired, you may run into the above issue.

Re: Teachers

I was going to Molloy and just transferred to Touro. Half of my building is going there for either TESOL, Special Ed, or Literacy. It is really cheap and super easy (sometimes) Chat Icon I like Touro a lot and find taking classes with 3 other people helps so much. FM me for more info if needed Chat Icon

Wow. Times have changed.

I got my Masters from Hofstra 10 years ago. The State of New York requires a masters for permanent certification. I didnt think it mattered to them, where it comes from so it shouldnt, in theory, matter to individual districts. I guess it does.

I work alongside people with graduate degrees from Bank Street College of Education, Teacher's College at Columbia, Queens College and Brooklyn College as well as colleges based out of state. It is possible that sharing an "alma mater" with a principal or suprintendent (or whoever else may interview) may lift an eyebrow or two and get you in the door, but it may not seal the deal.
