Teachers...
Does anyone use Teachers College...Lucy Calkins as their writing program? I teach Kind. and I use it but I really am not in love with it, especailly in the beginning. Anyone have a program they like/love?

Re: Teachers...
I'm supposed to be I don't have the set of books though, so I'm not using it. I teach the upper grades though... Have you tried looking at Fountas and Pinnell?

Re: Teachers...
I like the Lucy Caulkins books but I don't follow one particular person/model. I take ideas from everywhere and just do what works in my classroom.

Re: Teachers...
I like Nancie Atwell's approach, but I think it's more geared to middle school. I find that I tend to mix it up, depending on the genre. Lucy Calkins' approach has become almost cult-like in NYC (at least in my region), which means that I am less inclined to want to use it.

Re: Teachers...
I teach 1st grade and use it, I have to use it. It's okay. This is my 4th year doing it, so I'm used to it. Although coming from a first grade stand point, some of my readers that came into 1st, have NO COMPREHENSION skills. They are level 7-8 reading accuracy(E-CLAS) and I had to move them all the way down to a 4 because they can read, but have no idea what they are reading.
So, I think more focus need to be on comprehension. Not just teaching them to ask themselves, "does my reading make sense?"

Re: Teachers...
Teachers in the younger grades have LC to work from. I've looked at her set for the older grades, they are not bad. We also have Ralph Fletcher. I love Nancy Atwell too, but she is more for 5-8. Linda Hoyt has two good minilesson books, and they have some things for the younger grades. I also like Ann Goudvis and Stefanie Harvey for 3-6.

Re: Teachers...
Hate hate hate LC. Sorry but to me, it is the most pathetic approach to teaching. I appreciate her passion for literacy, but to say that this is the model is bad. Kids can't write anymore, there is NO creativity and teachers are bored. So I follow the unit of study but incorporate other sources.

As in journal prompts or things along those lines? Yes, and they are so much happier. I am also using more graphic organziers to get them thinking more about what they want to write, and I'll be using the 4 square method this month to try out something new. There is too much ownership on 6 year olds. They really need a lot of guidance when it comes to writing and I don't feel like TC gives them enough guidance. It gives them freedom but then there isn't accountability..

Re: Teachers...
Exactly, they can bearly write their own names none the less come up with a topic, a matching picture and DETAILS for both. I know I am being mean but as you said at this point they need guidance. It is so frustrating!
