We start to screen them in 2nd grade to see if they are in our program that starts in 3rd grade.

what assessments do you use? If they are gifted, do you move them ahead a grade or does your school have a program?

The reason I ask is because on another board this woman from the mid-west said they tested her son in public school in Kindergarten and he WOULD have been in the gifted program if she did not transfer him the next year and then again the following year! Then in 3rd grade, in private school, he didn't make the program.

2nd grade. Though some gifted services begin before then.

The formal GT "program" starts in 3rd grade.

3rd grade.

IMO kindergarten is too early to test for this. just because you can read in K or do math computations, doesn't mean you are gifted. it means you are an early learner and everyone else will catch up to you within the next year. giftedness is a whole different level and there are few children who are truly gifted and not just "smart"

I can attest to that

2nd grade testing... can be placed in gifted program by 3rd grade....

although in my district, it has become a bit of a joke in my opinion. it seems like if you are precocious, hardworking and an above avergage student, you get in. that doesn't make you truly gifted. also, there are parents in my district that literally pay tutors so their child can perform well enough on the test to get in. it's such a joke...
