Teachers, can anyone help me with rubrics?
My mom (who is a teacher) said I should review this. I looked it up online, but I'm a little confused. Can someone break down the idea for me?
Thanks!

Re: Teachers, can anyone help me with rubrics?
Rubrics are essentially guidelines for the kids to follow to know how to achieve a certain grade. They are usually on a scale of 1-4 but it depends on the teacher. It usually is specific to the topic and assignment being studied. For instance, on a literacy poetry anthology, ours went like this: 4- 4 or more different types of poems, anthology contains at least 10 poems, no spelling errors, creative pictures pencil lines erased, color
3- 2or 3 different types of poems, 9-10 poems altogether, 1-2 spelling errors, pictures
2- 2-3 types of poems, 7-8 poems altogether, 3 or more spelling errors, etc. etc.
We created it together so that they knew what to do in order to get a 4!

Re: Teachers, can anyone help me with rubrics?
yes it is used a lot and adminstrators definitely look to see if you have one when you get observed... I am an art teacher and use a general rubric whenever I grade... it shows the students exactly where their grade is coming from.
I have 5 categories (20 points for each category): Effort, creativity & originality, work habits, understanding of concept/assignment, and final project quality
They spread across a grid... then the other way I have the different point values...excellent, good, fair, satisfactory, unsatisfactory... so if they score 20 points (excellent in all 5 catagories they get a 100... if they scored excellent in 4 categories and good in 1 catagories they get a 97... does that make sense??
I use the general rubric for the majority of our projects... sometimes a more individualized rubic is used like when they have to write a paper so they know EXACTLY what I am looking for!

It's also a good idea to give the rubric to the students with the assignment, so they know exactly what you are looking for
