Teachers: do you have emergency sub plans?
If so, what's in them?
I want to get some ideas together... i never call in if i feel sick in the morning since it's almost more obnoxious to get lesson plans together.
Do you have anything on hold for in case you just can't make it in? I teach 5th - if that helps :)
Thanks!

Really? Yuck! i was sick once, and knew i was calling in the next day so i stayed at work until 630 the night before getting 4000 things together... i didn't want her to be without something to do.
I did hear that a lot of teachers don't leave stuff though - i couldn't do that to someone.
I'm just trying to come up with some general things they could do if i woke up really sick one morning, and did not want to drag myself in.

Yes, our headmaster requires that we have them. However, since I'm the music teacher, my emergency sub plans consists of the remote control to the VCR

I can get away with that for social studies - i have 2 classes of that.
And I can do wishbone for language arts.
but it's that darn math that i get stuck with. I could just have them do a practice SOL i guess.
they'd sooooo hate me

Re: Teachers: do you have emergency sub plans?
I always have a textbook assignment ready to go in case of emergency. If I have a little notice, I will normally run off some sort of math puzzle (I teach 7th grade).

Re: Teachers: do you have emergency sub plans?
We're not required to leave anything. In the past, if I knew I was going to be out, I'd leave something with a responsible student, but since we don't have regular subs (we have to pick up periods for absent teachers) usually the work didn't get done. However, when we have to cover for an absent teacher, we are expected to have a lesson. I keep a few generic things on hand that I can do in a snap with little preparation.

Re: Teachers: do you have emergency sub plans?
I have worksheets that have a post it note on them that says "In case of emergency sub". That's about it. I like to plan for the month, so if I do need a sub, it isn't too hard to make up plans. But next year, I want to have something made up just in case. I always feel guilty about calling in. At the moment, my AP lives down the block, so when I had Strep, DH ran my plans down to her.

Re: Teachers: do you have emergency sub plans?
We were required to give in 3 days-worth of Emergency Lesson Plans and while they are rarely used administration has used it against people who haven't used them ie written them up for being out with having lesson plans available. So we do it just to have them available for them.
Mine basically include a sample schedule for a day, a read-aloud book with the post-it notes already in it for the thinkalouds and questions I want the sub to ask the students, worksheets for math, social studies/science, writing and a venn diagram type stuff for reading. it also includes a class list and partner lists so that they know who the reading partners are, math partners, etc.

Re: Teachers: do you have emergency sub plans?
I have a sub folder that outlines everyday of the week and gives miscellaneous information about the kids, explanations for dismissal, etc. Then, I have a stack of trays (one tray for every day of the week). Each tray has work in it that I may or may not do. If I call out, the sub reads the sub folder and picks what they want to do out of the tray. I try to make it as easy as possible. I remember how it was- I subbed for almost 3 years!

Re: Teachers: do you have emergency sub plans?
Well, in 5th grade, you could even tell them to do the next two pages in math, read the chapter in ss, or something like that. The kids are big enough to know where they are.
Also, maybe put some writing activities, or like crosswords or something in a folder as extras. You could even say to have the children write a fairy tale using their spelling words, or something like that.

Re: Teachers: do you have emergency sub plans?
We are required to have at least 3 days worth of emergency sub plans for each prep... annoying, but good to have. we have
I put in general review stuff, reading comprehension, stuff that doesn't have to be introduced, skills practice kind of worksheets.

Re: Teachers: do you have emergency sub plans?
When I was non tenured, we had to have a sub folder. But, now, I teach inclusion so if I was out, I call my partner who teaches a half day with me and she'll do all the plans. It is a very nice perk.

Re: Teachers: do you have emergency sub plans?
I have a sub folder which has activities for the students to do... if we need a sub, we are required to do it through a website, which usually gives us time to put together sub plans.. I do keep a spare in the folder.. usually an extra set of review dittos for hw... a few activity sheets and some basics about reading and writing workshop!
hope that helped!!
