Teachers, especially NYC ones...
I hate how teaching has gone from TEACHING to how your room looks and how your desks are placed. Does it friggin matter??????? Shouldn't the emphasis be on, oh I don't know, let's say, hmmm, TEACHING???
I had my desks in 2 long tables which according to colored dots were actually 4 tables, but keeping them together saved sooo much space. Yeah, that wasn't good. Had to seperate them. And then it was suggested that I turn the desks. Um, personally I don't think anyone should have their back to the board. Oh wait, what's that? I use the chalkboard??? Oh no...mea culpa. (for the record, yeah, I use my board. That little white board that measures 15" x 11" just doesn't seem as effective.) Ugh.

I totally understand your post. It's so sad that teachers aren't even given enough credit to set up their own room in some districts. It's gotten ridiculous. They forget the whole point is kids learning, not where they are sitting What works for some, doesn't work for others. What happened to "differentiation!"

What about the idea that the teacher is the facilitator who is leading the children into wanting to learn on their own! That cracks me up!
I like traditional education. Teacher at the front, students face the board, everything is organized! And yes, there is a time and place for group work!

Agreed. Don't get me wrong, I'm all about hands-on learning, having kids figure things out for themselves, but leave them to do their own thing and they do just that, do their own thing . But otherwise, this whole TC crap and the mayor with all his bull is just laughable!!!

Re: Teachers, especially NYC ones...
Are any of you in Empowerment Zone schools? We are, and supposedly we will be free of all those old mandates. But I will believe it when I see it.
I used to get so annoyed in the past the way the Rebots would come in and just focus on cosmetics- the desk arrangements, etc. They never liked how my classroom library was set up, and I wanted to say, "OK, I have over 1,000 books, 36 kids, a math center, a writing center, and this is as good as I can get it."
Miss Jones- I totally agree about TC and the Mayor- it's amazing how everything TC is like a religion and if you don't do it their way you're messing up the kids. And the mayor just wants everything to be a corporate model- I went to an Emp. Zone meeting where they were introducing CEO of this and CFO of that, and I really wanted to ask these people how much time they'd spent in classrooms.

I don't teach in NYC but I am a teacher. I totally agree with you that so many schools have lost focus of the reason we're there...to teach! I hate all the polical nonsense and BS that goes on in schools now. I really wish some people would spend more time worrying about the kids...that's why we're there. Lots of to all the teachers!
