If you have a degree other then an elementary ed or secondary ed degree. Is there a way you can get certified while enrolled in a masters program for teaching? If so how would I go about gettng these certifications. TIA

Re: Teachers ? for you
My BA is in Psychology and Communication... Never planned on teaching. However, I enrolled in a master's program at Dowling and got certified to teach elementary preK-6 and reading k-12. I took some required courses at suffolk too...like Spanish... I got my certified to teach within 10 months...finished my masters a year after that.
ETA: I took just enough courses at first to qualify to student teach my second semester...then while I student taught I took the required teaching exams...and that is how I got certified before I even finished the program.

Re: Teachers ? for you
Yes, there's is a way, however, it's basically like getting the ed. degree, anyway. I know it's a ton of extra work, at least in music it is. I'm certified in Massachusetts, and my degree is in music performance and my masters (which I'm oh-so-close to be done with!) is going to be in musicology. NYS will not certify me with those degrees, but MA did If I wanted to become a certified teacher in NYS, then I would have to go back to school and take undergrad ed. courses ontop of an entirely new MA program. Lucky for me, I never plan on teaching in a public school and my MA cert. works fine for the private schools.

My BA is in Eng and History and it was through my MA that I was certified. Call the Education dept at the school you are at and they can help you.

Re: Teachers ? for you
The rules changed a lot as of February 2004.
At Dowling, the only difference between getting just your certification and your Masters is just 3 classes (in my case, my 3 grad math classes). I just sucked it up and got my Masters.
ETA: I was a career changer (accounting) so I did have to go back to Suffolk also to reach 36 undergrad math credits. I only had 16 from my undergrad degree.

Or you can contact Eastern or Western Suffolk Boces. I'm sure Nassau Boces has the same dept too. They have an education Certification Dept. they will look at your transcripts and tell you exactly what you need to do. A friend of mine did that and they told her because of her undergrad she only needed like 6 classes to get certified.

I called them yesterday. I spoke to some students at my school and they said that is they are doing. I just downloaded the paperwork

Re: Teachers ? for you
I had a liberal arts degree in Urban Studies and i went for MS in Elementary Ed at Queens College. I didnt have to take any extra course to get certified.
ETA: If you want to work in the city, there's the NYC Teaching Fellows program and they pay for your masters. The program is for people who are changing careers.

Re: Teachers ? for you
I had a BA in Communication...got my masters in 2years...I probably could have done it in a shorter amount of time but I was working as well...I believe its 36 credits inclu student teaching
ETA....to be honest...I would not do elem ed...do special ed or literacy...there are just not that many jobs in elem ed...or do 7-12 in a specialized area
